AERL at UALR/UAMS
Samuel R. Atcherson, Ph.D.
Director
Associate Professor of Audiology
University of Arkansas at Little Rock,
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
Sam holds a bachelors (1997) and masters (2000) degree from the University of Georgia and he received his doctorate (2006) from the University of Memphis. At age 3, he was diagnosed with a bilateral, mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss, which became progressively worse through his graduate studies. Sam wore hearing aids in both ears throughout most of his childhood and adult education, until he received a cochlear implant in his right ear in the summer of 2000. Sam is now a bimodal user and probably will continue to do so until the time is right for a cochlear implant in his left ear. Though Sam communicates orally and uses his hearing well, he is fluent in American Sign Language, which he enjoys teaching. Outside of his academic appointment with UALR/UAMS, Sam is a board member of the Arkansas Hands & Voices chapter, developer/webmaster for the Arkansas Academy of Audiology, is a founding leader of a group of Deaf/hard of hearing audiologists, is Audiology Profession Leader and Past President of the Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Losses, Treasurer for the Arkansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ArkSHA) and former member of the Task Force on Healthcare Careers for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Communities.
Sam is married to pediatric audiologist, Dr. Rebecca Atcherson, and they have two daugthers and a Yorkie.
