The Department of Biology
is one of the largest and most dynamic
on the UALR campus. Our location in Little Rock, Arkansas’ capital and largest
city, provides students with immediate access to the commercial and government
entities that are part of the capital city atmosphere, and our central location
in the state ensures that it is only a short drive to each of the five distinct
physiographic areas of the state (Ozark and Ouachita Mountains, Crowley’s
Ridge, Mississippi Delta, Gulf Coastal Plain). Biology majors and graduate
students capitalize on these resources for career opportunities after graduation
and to support research during their academic programs.
The Department of Biology has a long tradition of involving students in
research as full team players. Many of our undergraduates leave with
peer reviewed publications or professional presentations to their credit.
We offer degree options that will suit almost any biology major. Students
may choose a traditional BS program in Biology, or one with concentrations
in Molecular Biotechnology, Fisheries and Wildlife Management, or Secondary
Education. Another option is a BS in Environmental Health Science. We also
have excellent opportunities for graduate level study in the Department's
Master of Science Program, an MS option in Integrated Science, and a Ph.D.
program in Applied Biosciences offered through the Applied Science Department.
The world-class medical facilities of the University of Arkansas for Medical
Sciences campus, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Health Department,
and Pollution Control and Ecology agency are all within minutes of the
UALR campus. Outdoor recreational options are virtually unlimited in the
rich natural environments for which Arkansas is famous.
