University of Arkansas at Little Rock
I established the University Writing Center here
and ran it for over 17 years. During this time, the Writing Center
grew from an idea to a vital academic Center, which now provides several
thousand hours of service to students each year. I am proud of this
Working with Lady Falls Brown from Texas Tech University,
Carol Lane, UA Fayetteville, Jim McDonald, University of Louisiana
at Lafayette, and others, I established the South Central Writing
Centers Association, served as its first president, and continued
to serve on the board for a number of years.
I've also had a part in the establishment of several
other writing centers in the Arkansas, including those at the the
University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Henderson State University,
East Arkansas Community College, and Ouachita Technical College.
In the last several years, I've been back in the
classroom, teaching full-time; please see "Teaching:
Courses and Ground Rules" for specifics.
A couple more achievements at UALR:
I worked collaboratively with Barbara Silaski and Margaret Birdsong
on the grant which ultimately funded the Adult Student Campus Connection,
now a part of the Office of Campus Life.
I worked with Dean Richard Hanson, Eileen Anderson,
Larry Henthorn, and others to write UALR's most recent Self-Study
Report for renewal of accreditation from North Central Association.
Our report was featured as a model at the 2001 annual meeting of NCA
I have served as a consultant in the Little Rock
Writing Project several times as well as on the advisory board.
One of my current interests is assessment of writing
programs. I have served for some time as coordinator of assessment
of First-Year Writing at UALR.
Richland College of the Dallas County Community College
The Dallas County System is terrific. I was part
of the original faculty which
established Richland College in north Dallas. I taught composition
and literature (British Literature survey and Black American Literature,
among others) there for seven years.
University of Arkansas at Fayetteville
I was an MA student at Fayetteville, where I taught
introductory courses and "Junior English."
