Topic of the next show: Dysfunctional Families
We hear a lot about family values these days, especially around election time. Families are the center of our individual understanding of ourselves in relationship to the world around us. When you are very young the common thought is that your family is just like every other family. As we mature we often begin to see differences between our own family and our friends families. Probably most of us, by the time we reach adulthood, think that especially our family is definitely dysfunctional. What changes in the understanding of dysfunctional families has taken place from the older generation to the very young generation? Did the older generation even recognize dysfunctions within the family? And is there a young person who does not think their family is dysfunctional? Join us Tuesday, September 16th at 6:06 for Dysfunctional Families - Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow, right here on KUAR FM89. If you have a comment send it to yttkuar@gmail.com.
Older Generation:
- When your generation was young, was there much awareness of what we now call the 'dysfunctional family'? What did you call it then?
- How did the community or your friends respond to the dysfunctional family?
- Looking back to those years, how did individuals in dysfunctional families find help, or did they?
- Among your cohorts, do you recognize dysfunctions that were passed on to the next generation?
- As your generation has matured to senior status, how have the vestiges of dysfunctional families affected your whole life?
- Has there been any positive outcome from being in a dysfunctional family?
Middle Generation:
- Awareness of what we now call 'dysfunctional families' came along as your generation was still relatively young. How was the dysfunctional family different in your generation from the older generation?
- How did finding that there was a name for what you had been experiencing change your relationship to your family?
- For those in your generation who did recognize the dysfunctions in their family, how did they cope with dysfunctions? For those who did not recognize the dysfunctions, how were they affected by them?
- Now that your generation is in your middle years and dysfunctions are known, what can you do to stop those dysfunctions from being passed on to the next generation?
- The cumulative affect of dysfunctional families must have had an affect on the social structure of our society. From you generation's perspective, how has the dysfunctional family changed society?
- Does your generation recognize dysfunctional traits that you have passed on to your children?
Younger Generation:
- Among your cohorts, how did your generation define a healthy family vs. a dysfunctional family?
- How does someone in your generation from a dysfunctional family, escape the affects of those dysfunctions and live a normal life?
- If we can assume that society has changed due to dysfunctions, how can your generation both cope with and redirect society from the negative affects of dysfunctional families?
- Looking back to your grandparent's generation, do you recognize dysfunctions that have been passed down directly through your families?
- What help is available to your generation to stop the dysfunctional from being passed on...and is your generation willing to stop those dysfunctions?
