This home made Quartz Crystal Micro-Balance (QCM) setup (Fig. 1) can measure dynamic changes in the mass of a nanostructured/thin film coating, as a function of temperature (RT to 500 oC), time, and pressure (10-3 bars up to 40 bars), in the scale of as small as “nanograms”. We are using this system during our hydrogen storage and fuel-cell electrode characterization studies. We also have attached a residual gas analyzer (RGA) to the QCM system in order to perform detailed mass spectroscopy analysis during gas absorption/desorption at our thin film and nanostructured coatings. Using this system, we were able to measure dynamic hydrogen absorption and desorption properties of magnesium nanostructures.
