Each year, many college students "test out" of classes. The concept is simple. If you already have skills or knowledge in a specific area, why take the class? Students enjoy the low prices and convenience of earning credit by examination. Why not join in? |

College Level Exam Program (CLEP) NOTE: July 1, 2008, CLEP fees will increase!
Departmental Exam Program (DEP)
Excelsior College Examinations
Advanced Placement Program (AP)
DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support)
International Baccalaureate Organization
Students who wish to obtain credit through examination may do so in selected courses. There are six sources of examination credit:
The Advanced
Placement Program (AP)
of the College Board;
Credit by Exam, Your GPA,
and Your Academic Records
Credit obtained through examination is recorded
as approved hours on the official permanent record without grade
or grade points after the student has been enrolled at UALR for
one semester or one summer term. In other words, credit by exam does not
affect your gradepoint average, and you must have an active
transcript in order for credits to be posted.
You can't use credit by exam to raise a grade
in a course. For example, if you made a D in Introduction to
Sociology, the only way to remove the D from your GPA is to retake
the course and make a higher grade. Taking the CLEP test in Sociology
won't help -- and you can't get credit twice for the same course
anyway. If you made an F in Introduction to Sociology, you could take
the CLEP test to try to earn the credit hours, but the F would remain
in your GPA.
There is no limit on the number of hours you may earn through credit by exam. Schedules for the examinations vary. It is important that registration deadlines and score reporting dates for each program be carefully observed.
Transferability of Credits
Credit by exam policies vary considerably from
campus to campus. Receiving credit at one school is no guarantee of
receiving credit at another school.
If you are transferring in to UALR and you tested out of courses at another school, check UALR's policies listed below to determine if you (a) took tests that are accepted at UALR; and (b) made a passing score according to UALR policy. If you did, contact the national testing company (for example, CLEP) to have an official score report sent to UALR Testing Services for evaluation. Photocopies and student copies are unofficial and will not be accepted.
If you earn test-out credits at UALR and you decide to transfer to another university, you will need to check with that university to determine their policy. Again, the fact that you have test-out credits posted on your UALR transcript is not a guarantee that the credits will be recognized elsewhere.
Procedures for
Establishing Credit
at UALR
Official CLEP, AP, ECE, DANTES, and IB score
reports must be sent directly to the Office of Testing Services from
the national testing company.
If the student makes the required score, an
official report documenting the credit earned is completed by the
department chairperson and sent to the Office of Records and
Registration. A copy of the official report is mailed to the student.
Policy Review
Only examinations that have been approved by
the faculty of the appropriate department are included in the credit
by examination program.
Decisions as to which tests are accepted are
made by UALR faculty members. The minimum score required for each
approved test has been set by the faculty of the department involved.
Special Accommodations
Special testing accommodations are provided for
students with documented disabilities. Specific arrangements should
be made with the Testing Coordinator well in advance of registration
for CLEP or DEP exams. Registration information for AP and ECE exams
includes directions to be followed for those tests.

At UALR, an essay is required for each history exam and the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature exam, in addition to the multiple-choice section. These essays are hand-written by the examinee and scored by UALR faculty members.
The multiple-choice CLEP tests are offered on computer. Most tests last about 90 minutes, but the test may be broken into separately timed sections depending upon which test you are taking. The number of questions may vary by test. See the test descriptions for more information.
The English Composition with Essay test consists of a multiple choice section and an essay section. This is the only CLEP essay that must be typed on the computer. The essay is transmitted electronically to CLEP in New York for scoring. Click here for a scoring schedule.
The CLEP tests in French, German, and Spanish contain listening sections. See the test descriptions for more information.
CLEP scores are reported on a scale of 20 to 80. There is no penalty for guessing. When you take the test on computer, you see your multiple-choice score immediately. (Exception: Scores for the "English Composition with Essay" test will be mailed to you from the College Board.) Instant scoring is available for all tests EXCEPT:
English Composition with Essay (the essay, which is typed by the examinee, is scored by CLEP in New York approximately twice per month; you will NOT receive any score on the test date; click here for a scoring schedule)
- History essays (required for UALR students only; you will receive the multiple choice score on the test date; if you pass, you will be given a paper-pencil essay test; the essays are graded in the UALR Department of History, usually within two weeks)
- Other essays (American Literature, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature, English Literature, Freshman College Composition), are scored at the college or university where you want credit. Response time will vary. (You will receive the multiple choice score on the test date. If you pass, you will be given a paper-pencil essay test.)
MILITARY PERSONNEL: Click here for information on saving $65 per test.
The CLEP tests that are listed in the table below are accepted for credit at UALR.
CLEP Tests Accepted for Credit at UALR(This list consists only of those CLEP tests that are accepted for credit at UALR. There are other CLEP exams, and students who are attempting to earn credit at an institution other than UALR may take any CLEP test that is listed on the current CLEP registration form. Of course, you should make sure your that institution gives credit for the test(s) you take. If you don't have a registration form, you can access one on-line using the link below.)

IMPORTANT NOTE ON SPANISH: In August 2007, changes were made in the content of the test, and the required scores were changed. The score you need will depend upon when you tested. You can tell by looking at your score report -- if it shows a recommended score of 66 for 12 hours, you tested under the old guidelines (66 for 12 hours and 58 for 9 hours). If your score report shows a recommended score of 63 for 12 hours, you tested under the new guidelines (63 for 12 hours and 56 for 6 hours). The score of 50 for 6 credit hours has not changed. Contact Testing Services if you have questions. |

The UALR Department of History requires that all examinees take and pass an ESSAY test in addition to the CLEP multiple choice test. There is no additional fee for the essay test. ON THE TEST DAY: You will take the CLEP multiple choice test first. If you make a passing score according to UALR requirements, you will then take the essay test. Essay questions are written and scored by UALR history faculty. Results will be mailed to the examinee, usually within 2 weeks of the test date. |

IMPORTANT STEPS IN REGISTERING FOR AND TAKING CLEP TESTS
Decide which CLEP test(s) to take.
UALR students: Choose from the list of CLEP tests approved for credit at UALR.
Students seeking credit at other institutions: Check with your school for approved tests. UALR administers all CLEP tests, even those tests that are not accepted for credit at UALR. (Click here for additional information about testing for credit at other colleges and universities. Baptist School of Nursing students, click here.)
Obtain a CLEP registration form one of the following ways.
Log on to http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/reg.html and click on "Download the CLEP Registration-Admission Form." Print out the registration form.
Pick up a registration form at UALR Testing Services. Forms are available in the bookshelf outside Ross Hall 409 any time the building is open.
Pick up a registration form at another college or university.
Complete the registration forms, items 1 through 23. Click here for pointers on completing the form correctly.
Choose a test date.
Check available dates at this link.
Note that our registration deadline is one week in advance of your preferred test date.
Enter your preferred testing date in item 9. If you are mailing in your registration form, include a second choice date. We are limited by the number of our computers. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Do you want to take more than one test? You may take up to two 90-minute exams per test date. One registration form per date is necessary.
Prepare your payment. Click here for details. (If you are military personnel, click here for information.)
Submit the completed registration form and your fee to UALR Testing Services one of the following ways.
Receive your Admission Ticket.
If you register in person, your Admission Ticket will be given to you upon receipt of your completed registration form and fee.
If you register by mail, your Admission Ticket will be mailed to you.
Read your Admission Ticket. If tells you where, when, what to bring, what not to bring, how to reschedule, and other information information. Make particular note of the following information.
TWO OFFICIAL IDs (one with a photo) with your current and complete legal name are required on the test day. Your primary ID must be a government-issued photo ID with signature, such as a driver's license, passport, or state-issued ID. Your secondary ID must have a photo or signature, such as a social security card, student ID, credit card, or employee ID, or an additional primary ID. Unacceptable IDs include birth certificates, club membership cards, check cashing cards, and IDs with an incorrect name. (If you are military personnel, you must also provide appropriate military ID in order for DANTES to pay your $65 per test fee. Click here for information.)
Your $65 per test fee must be paid on the test day by check or money order payable to CLEP, or by a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express) from an American bank. Cash is not accepted, and credit cards from foreign banks are not accepted. (If you are military personnel, click here for information.)
Do not bring food, drinks, books, papers, study guides, bookbags, or calculators to the test. If a calculator is permitted for your test, it will be provided on your computer. Other items such as purses and bookbags also are not permitted in the test room. Please don't bring them with you, or be prepared to store them in a file cabinet in our office.
Cell phones, pagers, beeping watches, and other electronic devices are NOT permitted in the test room, even if they are turned off. Please do not bring these items with you, or be prepared to store them in a file cabinet in our office. Click here for details.
Please do not bring children with you. They are not permitted in the test room, and Testing Services staff cannot provide child care for you.
Study for your test. Study materials are available in bookstores and on the College Board website. Testing Services has a reference copy of the official CLEP study guide that you may view in our office.
Take the test. Before beginning, spend some time on the tutorial to familiarize yourself with the testing software.
See your score as soon as you finish testing. Exceptions: The "English Composition with Essay" test score will be sent to you from CLEP. Click here for a scoring schedule. (Note: The essay portion of the English Composition with Essay test must be typed. All other essays are handwritten.) Handwritten essays will be scored in the appropriate academic department. Most UALR-scored essays are scored within one to two weeks of the testing date.
Take your personal copy of your score report with you. The College Board (the company in New York that coordinates national CLEP testing) will send an official copy to the college or university that you indicated on the computer. Official score reports usually reach the recipients within two weeks of your test date. Please note that UALR does not send scores to other institutions -- we download your data electronically to the national CLEP program, which then sends your scores to your institution.
If you are trying for credit at UALR and you passed your exam, your credit will be processed automatically. Paperwork must be sent from Testing Services to the department that grants credit. After approval in the department, the Office of Records and Registration posts your credit to your transcript. Note that you must have a current transcript for credits to be posted. If this is your first semester at UALR, or if you have not enrolled, your credits cannot be processed until you have completed a semester and earned grades at UALR.
If you don't pass your CLEP test but you wish to try again, you must wait SIX MONTHS before retesting in that particular subject. If you take the "English Composition" test, you must wait six months before taking the "English Composition with Essay" test.
CLEP Test Schedule
CLEP tests are administered on selected Monday and Tuesday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. You may take up to two 90-minute sessions in one afternoon. The registration deadline is at least ONE WEEK in advance of your test date. Late registrations are not accepted. Earlier registration is recommended, as computer space is limited. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE DURING THE SUMMER, WHICH IS OUR BUSIEST TESTING PERIOD.
April 15, 21, 22, 29
May 5, 6, 13, 19, 20, 27
June 2, 3, 9, 10, 17, 23, 24, 30
(Some dates fill in advance. Register early! Remember that the registration deadline is one week in advance of the test date -- and sometimes if you wait until the deadline, you won't get your first choice date.)
IF YOU NEED TO TEST ON SOME OTHER DATE, OR IF YOU CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT DATE WE HAVE AVAILABLE....Please note that there are several other CLEP testing centers in the central Arkansas area. See the list at this link for additional information.
NOTE: July 1, 2008, CLEP fees will increase from $65 to $70 for a total of $90 for most tests and increase to $105 for tests with certain essays which are listed below.
Through June 30, 2008, most CLEP tests cost $85 each, but there are four tests with essays that cost a total of $95 each. The fees are split as follows:
$20 per test due at registration, payable by check or money order to "UALR."
$10 per essay due at registration (payable to "UALR") for the following essays only:
American Literature essay
- Analyzing and Interpreting Literature essay
- English Literature essay
- Freshman College Composition essay
NOTE: If you are NOT taking the essay portion of one of the four tests listed above, you will NOT be charged the $10 essay fee. There is *not* a $10 essay fee for the "English Composition with Essay" test, or for the UALR history essays.
Example: To register for the American Literature exam, you would pay $20 to register if you are taking the multiple choice portion only. If you need to take the essay portion also, you would pay a total of $30 to register. You can make one check payable to "UALR" for $30 in this case.
$65 per test must be paid (payable to "CLEP") on the test day. July 1, 2008, this fee will increase to $70. Check, money order, or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover) is acceptable on the test day. (Credit cards from foreign banks are not accepted. Cash is not accepted.)
If you are military personnel, click here for information about DANTES paying the CLEP fee.
The $20 per test fee paid to UALR is nonrefundable and is good for only one date and time. If you need to reschedule for any reason, including arriving too late for your scheduled test, or arriving without ID or test fee, you must pay $20 again.
Remember, this charge is per test. If you are registering for two tests, you will pay $40 at registration and $130 on the test date. July 1, 2008 this will increase to $140 for two tests.
Completing the CLEP Registration Form
(Note that CLEP registration forms change in July of each year. Depending upon which form you have, the following directions may not match your form completely. With some patience, though, you will be able to figure everything out.)
Items 1 through 8 and item 10: These are basic questions like your name and address.
Item 9: List your preferred test date. If you are mailing in your registration form, list a second date, in case your preferred date is unavailable.
Item 11 is UALR.
Item 12: If you have a documented disability, check the box. Contact the Director of UALR Testing Services for information. You must have your disability documented in UALR Disability Support Services.
Item 13: If you are a DANTES-funded military examinee, check yes and read the information here before you continue. Otherwise, check no and continue.
Item 14: Check the box(es) for the test(s) you want to take.
If there is an asterisk (*) next to the title, the test you are choosing has an essay portion. Indicate on the line at the bottom of Item 14 if you are registering for the essay or not. If not, print "n/a" on the line. Go here for more information.
Item 15: Note that you must wait six months before repeating a test that you have failed. If you retake the examination within the six-month period, your retest score will be cancelled and any test fees will be forfeited. (If you have taken the "English Composition" test, you must wait six months before taking the "English Composition with Essay" test.)
Item 16: Indicate how you will pay the $65 per test fee on the test day. (If you are military personnel, click here for information.)
Items 17 through 22 are unique to you. You are not required to enter a code number in Item 22. If you are sending your score to a school besides UALR, read the information on testing for credit at other institutions. If you ultimately want credit at Baptist School of Nursing, click here.
Item 23: If you are mailing in your registration form, print the address where you want your Admission Ticket to be mailed. Otherwise you may leave Item 23 blank.
CLEP Testing for Credit at Other Institutions
UALR is an open center for any person who wants to take a CLEP test. If you wish to earn credit at some other institution, make sure you find out which CLEP tests are accepted for credit and what the cutoff scores are for your college or university. You may register for any CLEP test listed on the current registration form, even if you don't see the test name on the table above. (The table above lists only those CLEP tests accepted for credit at UALR.)
Again, be sure to check the cutoff score that is required at your institution. Cutoff scores vary from school to school. If you don't know the required score for your test, you won't know if you passed!
Before the test begins, you will tell the computer where to send your official score report. All colleges and universities that are approved to receive CLEP scores will be listed in the computer.
You can check the list of official CLEP score recipients at this link. If you do NOT see your school listed, contact your school NOW and ask how to have your scores sent to them. If they give you a mailing address, bring it with you on the test date. Code numbers are NOT necessary.
Baptist School of Nursing students: Click here for additional information.
CLEP Credit Comes from Colleges and Universities, Not from CLEP Scores
Sometimes students think that taking a CLEP test means automatic college credit wherever you enroll, or even if you don't enroll anywhere. This is not the case.
When you take a CLEP test, you must send the score to an approved college or university if you want credit. Even if you earn an outstanding score on a CLEP test, you still have no credit until that score has been sent to and approved by your college or university.
Remember that CLEP policies vary from campus to campus. Don't take CLEP tests until you are sure where you will attend school and what that school's policies are.
To earn CLEP credit at UALR, you must have a current transcript, and you must make the required score set by UALR faculty members on tests approved by UALR faculty members.
If you have never attended UALR and don't plan to attend UALR, please do not send your CLEP scores to UALR. No credits can be awarded unless you have completed at least one semester here and have had grades posted to a transcript.
If you are unsure about where you want your CLEP credit, check with the college or university where you think you will earn your degree. Please don't spend your time and money on tests that don't earn credit for you.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL
Eligible military personnel and eligible civilian employees may test without paying the $65 fee per test to CLEP. CLEP tests for these persons are funded by DANTES. July 1, 2008, the CLEP test fee will increase to $70.
The $65 per test CLEP fee (and the $10 per essay fee, if applicable) is waived for the following eligible military personnel and eligible civilian employees:
Military personnel (Active Duty and Reserve) - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, Army Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, Army and Air National Guard.
Eligible civilian employees and spouses of participating Reserve Component and Coast Guard personnel.
Department of Defense Acquisition Personnel (only eligible for the following computer-based exams: Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics and Principles of Marketing).
THE WAIVER APPLIES ONLY TO THE $65 PER TEST CLEP FEE, AND THE $10 PER ESSAY FEE. THE $20 PER TEST FEE FOR UALR WILL STILL BE CHARGED TO YOU AT THE TIME YOU REGISTER TO TEST.
To receive the waiver, one of the following must apply to you:
You have a military ID indicating that you are currently a member of the ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES. (Note: Retired service members are NOT eligible for DANTES-funded CLEP testing at this time.)
You are a spouse of Coast Guard personnel or participating National Guard or Reserve components. Your ID must indicate UNITED STATES UNIFORMED SERVICES. (Note: Dependents are NOT eligible.)
You are a government-funded civilian performing military functions on a base. You must present appropriate ID to verify your status.
On the day of your test, you MUST present the appropriate ID as specified above. You must also have a second ID that includes your SIGNATURE (for example, a driver's license or passport). PLEASE NOTE THAT THE MILITARY ID ALONE IS NOT SUFFICIENT.
If you report to test without the appropriate ID to verify your military status, you will be charged the standard $65 fee per test and $10 per essay test, if applicable.

DEP Scoring Information
Departmental exams vary according to the subject. Some of the passing scores are percentage scores; others are percentile scores. Others are point scores, and a few are simply pass or fail. Complete information is available from the Office of Testing Services.Score processing time varies, but most score reports are processed within six weeks of the test date.
DEP Test Schedule and Registration
Schedule varies by test. Check the DEP Calendar below.
To register:
Come to Testing Services (Ross Hall 409) at least one week prior to the test date.
- Fill out a DEP registration form.
- For all DEPs except math and composition, take the registration form to the appropriate department for approval. (For example, if you want to take a Chemistry DEP, you must take the registration form to the Chemistry Department.) The department chairperson or a designee will sign the form. (This step is not necessary for the math and composition DEPs.)
- If you have questions on how to prepare, ask in the department. (In Testing Services, we have handouts for the Composition II and Speech DEPs only.)
- Submit your completed DEP registration form with a check or money order for $35 payable to UALR. The deadline to submit your form and fee is at least one week in advance of the test date.
- Receive an Admission Ticket with test day information.

Excelsior College Examinations
Most ECE exams are 3-hour tests. They are administered via computer at Pearson VUE Testing Centers.
Excelsior College was formerly called Regents College. Several years ago, these tests were called ACT-PEP (Proficiency Examination Program) exams. In the changes over the years, scoring methods and cutoff scores have varied. If you tested several years ago and need assistance in interpreting your scores correctly, contact the Director of Testing Services.
The following exams are accepted for credit at UALR.

If you have already taken an Excelsior College/Regents College/ACT-PEP test but did not have the scores sent to UALR, contact Excelsior College at 1-888-RCEXAMS to request that your scores be sent directly to UALR Testing Services.
AP exams contain both multiple choice and free response questions that require essay writing and problem solving. These exams are available to students who take AP courses in high school.
If you are NOT in high school but are interested in taking AP tests, contact AP directly. They will instruct you on what procedures to follow to try to locate a high school where you can test.
If you took an AP test in high school, you should have your scores sent to UALR for evaluation. Contact the College Board tollfree at 1-888-CALL 4 AP to request that your scores be sent to UALR. NOTE: If your scores are more than a couple of years old, they will be in the AP archives -- and archived scores often are slow in reaching us. It pays to order archived scores well in advance of when you need them!
As of fall 2000, UALR will award some sort of placement, exemption, or credit for every AP test score of 3 or higher.
A score of 2 can be used for placement or exemption in some cases. Consult the table below for complete information.
