Community Connections
Sometimes when you read a book, you get interested in an issue or problem which you might want to explore in your own community. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Activity: Finding Sources of Help in a Community
If you are reading about a person with a problem that interests and concerns you, explore the sources of help that the character found. Explore the possible kinds of help that person could have found in your community. Visit community organizations or interview people with the problem and discuss the sources of help in your school and community. You may be interested in volunteering with an organization.
If you discover that your community does not have enough sources of help, you might want to consider a service learning project to develop an organization, a web site, or a directory of resources. Or you might want to write letters to community leaders telling them of the importance of the problem.
