Building Your Vocabulary
Vocabulary Building Strategies
by Rachel Parker

Dear Reader:

Do you have trouble with new vocabulary words when reading a new book for class?  Many do, so do not worry.  Listed below are a few ways to figure out what the new words mean.

                              Your Helper

When you come to a word you do not know when reading your book, take a Post-It note and write the word on it.   BE SURE TO MARK YOUR PAGE!!!!!

If you do not have any Post-It notes, just use a notebook.   MAKE SURE YOU WRITE THE PAGE #.
When you come to a new word in a sentence, look at the rest of the sentence and see if it gives you a clue to what the word means.

Look for familiar patterns with the little words you already know and use them to figure out bigger words.

                Ex.  it, sit
                      and, land, stand
                      out, shouted, about
                      at, that

AND USE ONLY AS A LAST RESORT:

Use the dictionary to look up the word, but only if you CANNOT come up with the word using the other ways (1-4).
