Amy Tan was born in Oakland, California in 1952. Both her father and mother were Chinese immigrants who came to America in 1947. Her father was an employee of the U.S. Information Services during the war. He later died from brain tumors when Tan was fourteen. Tan’s mother moved her daughter and Tan’s younger brother to Switzerland. Tan graduated high school there and later went to California where she received her bachelor’s degree and mater’s degree in Linguistics. With a degree in Linguistics, Tan worked with young disabled children as a language development consultant.
Amy Tan has received numerous awards for her novels and countless recognitions for her works concerning Asian-American women. Tan’s stories have been translated into over 23 different languages across the world.
Tan is currently a member in a “vintage garage” rock band called “The Rock Bottom Reminders.” She lives in both San Francisco and New York with her husband, Lou, their two Yorkshire Terriers, Bubba and Lilli, and their cat Sagwa.
