Senior Justice Exhibits at the 28th Annual Arkansas Aging Conference

The Arkansas Aging Conference for 2008 was held at the Hot Springs Civic and Convention Center, running from the 29th through the 31st of October.  The Senior Justice Center operated a booth to exhibit information at the conference on the 29th and 30th.  Interns Amanda Carter, Dorena Wise, Josh Logan and Kim Woodward presented material at the Senior Justice Exhibit while seeking to raise awareness about crimes against the elderly and how the UALR Senior Justice Center works to educate seniors, family members and caregivers via research, presenting seminars and the operation of the Senior Justice Hotline (501.683.7153).  This conference is sponsored by the Arkansas Association of Area Agencies on Aging and the Arkansas Department of Human Services, Division of Aging and Adult Services.  The event included a Reception on 29 October for participants of the conference.  To view more information from the 2008 conference, visit http://www.arkansas.gov/dhs/aging/conf08registration.html for the conference’s schedule of events, list of speakers, and workshop information.

Senior Justice Volunteers at the Links Walk-A-Thon

The Links, Inc. recently held its annual Walk-A-Thon to benefit community organizations, locally.  Also, proceeds are shared with the Rice Depot in Arkansas.  Senior Justice intern, Josh Logan, came out to the sunrise Walk-A-Thon.  Dr. Montague and Sam Johnston volunteered for the Walk, with both Mr. Logan and Dr.  Montague participating in the Walk across The Big Dam Bridge.

AANHR’s 2008 Residents’ Rights Rally HUGE Success!!!

Arkansas Advocates for Nursing Home Residents held its 2008 Residents’ Rights Rally on Monday, October the 13th

The event was to be held at the steps of the Arkansas State Capitol, however due to weather conditions, the rally was moved inside to the Arkansas State Capitol Rotunda. Seating was provided for those who desired to sit.  Many Nursing Home Residents from around the state joined AANHR to bring attention to the needs of some of our most vulnerable citizens.

The rally began at 11:00a; a welcoming address was given by AANHR President, Martha Deaver.  Highlighted speakers included:

  • The Honorable Mike Beebe, Governor of the State of Arkansas
  • Dustin McDaniel, Arkansas State Attorney General
  • Kathie Gately, Arkansas State Ombudsman
  • Jerry Lancaster, Interim State President of AARP
  • Dr. David Montague, Director of UALR Senior Justice Center

This is the first time that the Governor of Arkansas addressed the AANHR Residents’ Rights Rally; highlighting how important it is for us to fight to protect the rights of our elderly living in Nursing Homes. 

Thank You AANHR and everyone who came to show support for this cause!!!
