The Anglo-American research discipline of Information Systems (IS) differs significantly from the German counterpart Wirtschaftsinformatik (WI), in particular with respect to research objectives and applied research methods. Constructive research approaches - sometimes referred to as “design science” - are predominantly applied in the discipline of Wirtschaftsinformatik. These approaches are aimed at the design of new ways of organizing business processes, as well as supporting information and communication systems. On the other hand, Information Systems is geared to the ideal of behavioristic social sciences, i.e. IS researchers empirically analyze actually existing cases for developing, introducing, or using information and communication technologies in business firms.
