English 4341.01    English Romantics: Shelley & Byron
House Rules

  1. Do your homework. Come to class. Be prepared to talk. Always bring the text to class.

  2. Oral reports: Undergraduate students will each give one oral report of 10-15 minutes on critical reading related to the course reading; graduate students will give two oral reports, one on Shelley and one on Byron. Oral reports will be on Wednesdays; presenters should provide the class with their bibliographic reference on the preceding Monday. The oral report assignment is here.

  3. Journals: Students will write a weekly journal of no less than a full typed page. These journals must be about some aspect of the class or readings, and should be posted on the class email list by 8:00 a. m. Wednesday. Individual journal entries will be ungraded, but you will receive a collective grade based on the percentage of the total you actually submit. Students giving the oral report for a given week should post his or her bibliography and notes to the listserve as that week's journal.

  4. Papers: Students will write three short papers. Details on these paper assignments may be found here.

  5. Grading:I use a 4-point grading scale:
    For final grades: A=4; B=3; C=2; D=1;F=0.

    For individual assignments: A=4; A-=3.7; B+=3.3; B=3; B-=2.7; C+=2.3; C=2;
                                                 C-=1.7; D+=1.3; D=1; D-=0.7; F= 0.

    The relative value of the assignments is as follows:

    All work must be completed to pass the class.

  6. Plagiarism is the unacknowledged use of another's work, whether directly quoted or paraphrased.
    It is intellectual theft and will not be tolerated. The best a plagiarist may hope for is an "F"
    on the particular assignment. If you have questions about plagiarism, please do not hesitate to ask.
