Using the Course Listserve

UALR sets up an email listserve for all classes. These email lists provide a good way for members of the class to communicate with each other, and for me to communicate with all of you at once. Below are instructions for joining the class listserve. Remember, anything you send to the listserve will go out to EVERYONE on the list; private communications should be emailed directly to the recipient. Joining the listserve is a course requirement. You should submit your journals on the listserve. You should be able to cut-and-paste your word processing text into an email/listserve message.

You are already enrolled on the listserve for this course under your UALR email address. If you do not regularly use your UALR email, you might want to sign-on to the course listserve from the email account you do regularly use. Here's how to do that.

How to subscribe to the email list:

Send email to this address

LISTSERV@UALR.EDU

Leave the "Subject" line blank. In the body of the message write (do NOT include the brackets)

SUBSCRIBE ENGL[course number and section] [your name]

Send your message.

When writing to the list, send your message to (again, NO brackets)

engl[course number and section]@ualr.edu

*****************************EXAMPLE*************************

To: listserv@ualr.edu
Subject:
Message: subscribe engl233710 Jane Doe

***************************************************************

REPLIES WILL GO TO THE ENTIRE LIST UNLESS YOUR REDIRECT THEM.

Note 1: In the "Subject" line, please put your name and the course number (for example, "Smith, Engl2337"). This makes my own record keeping much easier since I receive journals from all of my classes. Also, please DO NOT put the journal number (for example, "Journal 4") in your "Subject" line; putting the journal number can cause a lot of confusion because many people loose count of how many journals there have been, or how many they have submitted.

Note 2: Do NOT send your email in html format; not all email software reads it appropriately. Also, do NOT send your journals as attachments since these may be stripped by the university spam filter, and even if they make it through, your classmates may not be able to open them. The best idea is to write your journal entry with your word processor and then cut-and-paste it into the body of your email posting.

Note 3: Remember, journals should be roughly 250 words, and should be about the class readings, discussions or other class work, not how your week has been. The journals are an assignment, and part of your job is to prove that you are keeping up with the class.

Note 4: After you subscribe you will receive an email with instructions on how to customize your listserve account. For example, by default you will not receive copies of your own postings, even though everyone else will. If you wish to receive copies of your own postings send the following message (NO brackets):

To: listserv@ualr.edu
Subject:
Message: set engl[course number and section] repro
