IN MEMORIAM: DANTE JACUZZI
Faculty and students in the Cooper Honors Program in English very much miss Dante Jacuzzi.

Come for a light breakfast on Thursday 16 March, 8:30 to 11 am, in our newly renovated Cooper Lounge in SH 501 to meet Dr. Brad Minnick, currently at the University of Texas at El Paso, our new hire in Secondary Education/English Language Arts.
WE'RE BACK
You might have got used to not coming over to University Plaza, but please get back into the habit of visiting us now we are back in the renovated English suite, confusingly renumbered SH 501 (used to be SH 502). The new computers and printer in the Cooper Computer Lounge will be ready to use soon. Come and work in this quiet, redecorated, new space with its up-to-date equipment.
LAST SPEAKER FOR SPRING TERM
Dr. David Jauss will host a reading by prominent poet, novelist, and essayist Sydney Lea, who teaches at Dartmouth College. Dr. Lea has published a novel, two collections of nonfiction, and eight collections of poems, including Pursuit of a Wound, one of three finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in 2001. Dr. Lea's reading will be held at 7:30 pm on Thursday 6 April 2006 in the Bailey Alumni Center. Free and open to the public. Reception following reading.
FIRST UALR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPO
On the morning of Monday 17 April in DSC Rooms A & B, UALR will hold an Undergraduate Research Expo showcasing research and creative endeavors by undergrads in all disciplines. Even if you're
not a participant, please drop by to see and support the range of undergraduate research activities going on at UALR. Final projects in the Cooper Program are perfect examples of undergraduate research. Indeed, a number of Cooper projects will be featured at the Expo.
SHAKESPEARE SCENE FESTIVAL
Come and support Dr. Knutson who is hosting the SSF again this year and see how high school students interpret and perform the Bard.

Each morning, from 9:30 to 9:50, James Steed will give a demonstration of stage combat.
Volunteers are needed all days, all times, to watch the doors and keep students from entering and exiting during a performance.

COOPER STIPEND APPLICATIONS
New applications and second-year reapplications are due on Consultation Day,
Friday 5 May. Forms are available online and in the Department. Or contact Dr. Zabelle Stodola for further information.
RUTH LOVETT BOOKER SCHOLARSHIP
English majors that also meet other criteria (get the form in the English Department) can apply for the Ruth Lovett Booker Scholarship of $1,250. Applicants must submit an original piece of writing in any form (fiction or non-fiction) showing their communications ability. This year the topic is "Here by Chance." Minimum of 500 words, maximum of five double-spaced typed pages. The scholarship donors choose the winner.
Deadline is 4 April 2006 to bring a hard copy with completed application form to SH 501.
COOPER SEMINAR FOR FALL 2006
Dr. Dennis Vannatta will teach a Cooper seminar on Hemingway and Faulkner in fall 2006. Time TBA.
COOPER COLLOQUIUM
The 2006 Cooper Colloquium (with picnic following at Murray Park!) will be held on Friday 12 May in Donaghey Student Center Meeting Room D.
Latest information indicates the following students will be participating: Joseph Barnett, Christina Cereghini, Jake Khoury, Sara Murphy, Shelinda Pattison, Rain Story, Virginia Wyeth.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
Denies Gaskins was co-author (with Dr. Earl Ramsey) of a paper titled, "Still 'Tis 'No Extravagant Arithmetic': Walter Shandy's Tristra-paedia, Montaigne, and the White Bear Phenomenon," delivered at the South Central Society for 18th-Century Studies Conference, February 23-26, in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
Bryan Jackson, now at home in northwest Canada, sent a message recently saying that he was enjoying teaching Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Dylan Thomas to wayward grade 12 students!!
