COOPER SPEAKERS FOR SPRING 2006
1. In conjunction with Dr. Paul Yoder's Cooper seminar on William Blake, he will host visiting scholar Dr. Sheila Spector, whose topic is Benjamin Disraeli's Alroy. The text of this novel is available online at http://www.rc.umd.edu/editions/alroy/
Considered the first Jewish historical novel, Alroy is the story of David Alroy, the failed Jewish messiah of the period between the first two Crusades. The novel marks the transition from Disraeli's role as lawyer and writer to his role as politician.
Dr. Spector has published two books on Blake and Kabbalah and two collections of essays on Jews and British Romanticism recently.
Dr. Spector's lecture will be held at 7:30 pm on Thursday 9 February 2006 in Donaghey Student Center Meeting Room C. Free and open to the public. Reception following lecture.
2. Dr. David Jauss will host a reading by prominent poet, novelist, and essayist Sydney Lea, who teaches at Dartmouth College. Dr. Lea has published a novel, two collections of nonfiction, and eight collections of poems, including Pursuit of a Wound, one of three finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in 2001. Check out information about Sydney Lea at his website, http://www.sydneylea.com.
Dr. Lea's reading will be held at 7:30 pm on Thursday 6 April 2006 in the Bailey Alumni Center. Free and open to the public. Reception following reading.

INAUGURAL UALR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPO
On Monday 17 April in DSC Rooms A, B, and C, UALR will hold an Undergraduate Research Expo showcasing research and creative endeavors by undergrads in all disciplines. Participants will receive a $20 gift certificate, a T-shirt, and a certificate of participation.
Cooper students are strongly encouraged to apply to participate in this Expo. Further details are available from Dr. Zabelle Stodola. As from mid-January, application forms and information can be downloaded from the Graduate School/ Office of Research and Sponsored Programs website at http://www.ualr.edu/orsp.
The format is poster presentations, not spoken delivery. This is an excellent opportunity for Cooper students to present their Cooper projects before the Cooper Colloquium, which is a few weeks later than the Expo.
FEBRUARY 2006 IS JEWS IN LITERATURE MONTH (UNOFFICIALLY)
In addition to Dr. Sheila Spector's lecture on Alroy, Dr. Paul Yoder of the UALR English Department will discuss Allen Ginsberg's "Kaddish" on Wednesday 1 February at
7 pm in the Social Hall at Temple BšNai Israel, 3700 N. Rodney Parham Rd. in Little Rock, as part of the Templešs LI MUD HA'AM series.
Free and open to the public.
Ginsberg's "Kaddish" is a long, heart-rending elegy to his mother, Naomi Ginsberg, who died in 1956. Completed three years after Naomi's death, "Kaddish" is largely written in Ginsberg's trademark style of hallucinatory free-verse; its long lines and cultural references transport the modern reader into a world of hope, fear, political activism and domestic turmoil. The text of the poem is available online at http://www.questia.com/PM.qst?a=o&d=93673004.
HENDERSON STATE UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH CONFERENCE
If any of you are interested in submitting a proposal for the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference at Henderson State, held March/April, contact Dr. Zabelle Stodola
for details. Greg DeRossitte and Wendy Hedrick delivered papers last year. The Cooper Program pays the conference registration fee and mileage for driving there and back.
ATTENDING A CONFERENCE IN CONNECTION WITH COOPER FINAL PROJECT
The Cooper Program can provide limited funding for Cooper students who are interested in attending a conference that is clearly connected with their final project. Talk to the Director for details.
