House Rules
- Do your homework. Come to class. Be prepared to talk. Always bring the text to class.
- Oral reports: Each student will give one oral report of roughly 15 minutes on a topic or
critical reading related to the course reading. The topics are listed on the reading schedule, but
are open to interpretation or negotiation. The report should provide the basis for the class
discussion for that day, if not for the entire week. The student should provide a copy of his or
her bibliography and an outline for all members of the class. If there are any audio/visual
requirements for the presentation, the student should inform the instructor well in advance so that
arrangements can be made.
- Journals: Students will write a weekly journal of no less than a full typed page. These journals must be
about some aspect of the class or readings, and should be posted on the class email list by 9:00 a. m.
Tuesday. Individual journal entries will be ungraded, but you will receive a collective grade
based on the percentage of the total you actually submit. The student giving the oral report for
a given week should post his or her bibliography and notes to the listserve as that week's journal.
- Papers: Students will write 1 short paper (4-6 pp.) and one longer paper (10-15 pp.). The oral report
may, but need not, provide the basis for the longer paper or project. See Paper Assignments
for full information.
- Grading:I use a 4-point grading scale:
For final grades: A=4; B=3; C=2; D=1;F=0.
For individual assignments: A=4; A-=3.7; B+=3.3; B=3; B-=2.7; C+=2.3; C=2;
C-=1.7; D+=1.3; D=1; D-=0.7; F= 0.
The relative value of the assignments is as follows:
Oral report 15%
Paper 1 1 20%
Final Paper / Project 35%
Journals 15%
Participation 15%
All work must be completed to pass the class.
- Plagiarism is the unacknowledged use of another's work, whether directly quoted or paraphrased.
It is intellectual theft and will not be tolerated. The best a plagiarist may hope for is an "F"
on the particular assignment. If you have questions about plagiarism, please do not hesitate to ask.
