Rhetoric and Writing

Welcome to the Rhetoric and Writing Department

The Department of Rhetoric and Writing, winner of the UALR Department of Excellence Award, features a comprehensive undergraduate major and minor and a master’s degree program in professional and technical writing.  Because of the flexibility of these programs, students can adapt their study of persuasive, technical, and nonfiction writing to their particular needs and interests.

Our composition program serves more than 3,000 students each year, making an important contribution to UALR’s goals for general education.  We strive to provide all of these students with an intellectual and practical introduction to writing at the university, one which will help ensure success during their entire academic lives.

We are also closely partnered with the University Writing Center.  Founded in 1981, the Center works with writers from across the curriculum and in the community.  It is staffed by writing interns prepared to help writers with any stage of the writing process, and offers access to a writing reference library and to software designed to strengthen writing skills. Services are free to registered UALR students, and no appointment is necessary.

Additionally, the department is home to the Little Rock Writing Project, an official site of the National Writing Project.  The Writing Project offers professional development for teachers and administrators through its Summer Invitational Institute, workshops, and partnerships with schools.

We have an energetic and supportive faculty who are nationally and internationally recognized.  Locally, four members of the department have won UALR’s Faculty Excellence Award.  Our teachers bring their expertise to a wide range of courses, including

  • Auto/Biography Writing
  • Creative Nonfiction
  • Document Design
  • Editing for Publication
  • Grant Writing
  • Legal Writing and Analysis
  • Writing for Business and Government
  • Writing for Children and Families
  • Writing on the Web

We value your interest in our department and encourage you to contact us to discuss your future as a writer.
