"You Know You Want To..." is a tobacco cessation program funded by the Arkansas Tobacco Settlement Commission and designed uniquely for the entire UALR campus community, students and employees alike.
Many studies have shown that the combination of counseling with pharmaceutical aids is the most effective way to quit. But we wanted to know what YOU thought and what would help YOU quit or stay tobacco free. Dr. Carol Thompson and students in her speech communication class conducted focus groups this summer on the UALR campus to ask these questions of both students and employees. Here are some of the things they found:
- You want information about the effects and monetary costs of tobacco use.
- You want counseling and support groups.
- You want help with pharmaceutical aids for quitting.
- You want to know what happens to your body when you quit.
- You want alternatives to smoking that help with the stress of school and work
In the words of one participant in the focus group, "To break old habits you have to create new habits."
We provide support groups and individual counseling, a one-month supply of pharmaceutical aids for quitters and a series of events during the year to promote a tobacco free and healthy lifestyle for all UALR community members. Our support groups using the American Lung Association protocol are packed with information, methods of stress relief and substitutes for tobacco and peer and counselor support.
