Internship (in Psychology; 3369, 3469) is a 3 or 4 credit hour
course with prerequisites of junior standing and consent of the instructor.
A maximum of 6 hours may be earned and applied for credit toward fulfilling
major requirements. A maximum of 3 hours may be earned and applied for credit
toward fulfilling minor requirements.
Catalogue Description
This course provides practical experience in a professional
urban setting. Students work in a business, government agency, state mental
health institution, or similar location giving opportunities to apply their
academic background to develop applied skills.
Learning Objectives

To provide the student with an opportunity to experience the importance and
relevance of ideas learned in course work.

To broaden the experience of the student by exposure to professional settings.

To provide the student with the experience of preparing a resume, applying for a
job, and going through the interviewing and selection process for a job.

To give the student the experience of working within a group/team.

To enable the cooperating organization to receive the benefits of the special
talents and background of the student.

To improve the Psychology program by allowing the cooperating organization to
examine the department's product and provide input to the department's program.
Choosing an Internship Site
No one picks an internship site for you. Much of the
responsibility of finding an internship site is the student's. You may find an
internship site that has been developed (i.e. students have interned at this
site in the past) or you may blaze a new trail and establish an internship that
may better fit your needs (many internships fall into this category). You may

Guidelines for
Students

That the project, or work
plan, be defined well in advance of registration deadlines and be acceptable
to the student, the faculty supervisor, internship mentor, and the internship
coordinator.

A mid-semester report is
provided to the faculty supervisor by the internship mentor (this may be
formal using the Mid-Term Internship Mentor Feedback Form
or informal at the discretion of your faculty
supervisor).

An end-term paper (this
should be a formal paper of at least 1000 words in length, APA style)
submitted to your faculty supervisor.

An End-Term Internship Mentor Feedback Form
from the internship mentor.

A written logbook of hours
worked submitted to your faculty supervisor at end-term.

3 credits, 100 hours
minimum of documented work must be performed.
4 credits, 120 hours minimum of documented work must be performed.

Internships will be
unpaid. Your regular workplace cannot also serve as an internship.

Prerequisite requirements:
Junior or Senior status and completed course work appropriate to the project
as determined by the faculty supervisor and the internship mentor.

Prerequisite preferences: Overall GPA 3.0, psychology GPA 3.0.

Grades: Evaluation of the
intern's work is executed by the faculty supervisor in consultation with the
internship mentor.
