MUED 5292 Philosophy of Music Study
Course Syllabus - Spring 2003
Instructor: Dr. Pamela Pike

Objectives:

The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with the prevailing American music education philosophies from the past 30 years. After careful review of selected readings, the student will be expected to detail the thrust of each philosophic point of view and apply it to her own area of music education (i.e. class piano pedagogy). Additionally, the student will undertake a survey of important learning theories that have emerged during the past several decades. The student will then be encouraged to digest and assimilate the pertinent information into her own personal philosophy of music study.

Reserve Materials:

Throughout the semester, Dr. Pike will place resource materials on reserve at Ottenheimer Library. Perusal and/or detailed reading of these materials will be required both for written assignments and for in-class discussions.

Evaluation:

20%	Reading/writing assignment on “Music Matters” by Elliott
20%	Reading/writing assignment on “A Philosophy of Music Education” by Reimer
10%	Reading/writing assignment on additional readings on educational philosophy
45%	Reading/writing assignment on various learning theories
5%	Final 1000-word statement of student's personal philosophy of music study (due on May 1, 2004 )
