Course Syllabus – Spring 2004

Objectives:

The purpose of this introductory group teaching course is to provide the student with some of the necessary knowledge to instruct a beginning 3rd-age piano class. The student will explore class management techniques and understand piano lab equipment and set up issues. The instructor will provide the student with controlled and supervised teaching experiences in the piano laboratory and in the beginning piano studio. Verbal and/or written feedback will be provided on a weekly basis.

Additional Requirement:

            Continued subscription to Keyboard Companion Magazine.

 

            Continued student membership in MTNA.

 

 

Reserve Materials:

Dr. Pike will place materials on reserve in the library and/or make her own reference materials available as needed throughout the semester for certain reading assignments, projects, or for general reference.

 

 

Written Assignments:

Teaching Observations: Video tape (video tapes should be submitted with written evaluations by the student. These will be followed by written and/or verbal evaluations with Dr. Pike). There will also be in-class observation of student teaching throughout the semester. It will be expected that the student will make every effort to incorporate as many of the written and verbal suggestions from previous evaluations.  

 

 

Evaluation:    40%      Preparation for teaching of the beginning 3rd-age students and      preparation for weekly discussions with Dr. Pike

                        40%     Supervised teaching experience (video & evaluation)

                        20%     Final Project (written assignment TBA)
