Undergraduate Research EXPO Planned
The second Undergraduate Research EXPO will take place on April 16, 2007. Last year’s EXPO was attended by 58 students
representing the Colleges of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (20); Information Science and Systems Engineering (18);
Science and Math (15); Business (2); Political Science (2); and Education (1). The Undergraduate Research Committee and ORGS
will be working with you to make this year’s EXPO bigger and better. Watch your e-mails for related announcements.
As part of our efforts to institutionalize undergraduate research, UALR is now a member of the Council on Undergraduate Research
(CUR). Founded in 1978, the mission of the Council is “to support and promote high-quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship.” The council membership represents over 900 colleges and universities.

Graduate Student Research Forum Scheduled
The 17th annual “Graduate Student Research Forum,” organized by the Graduate Student Association and ORGS, is scheduled
for April. Last year’s forum included thirty-four presentations by graduate students. Mark your calendars and watch your e-mails
for related announcements.
Limited Matching Funds for Students
Limited matching funds (up to $350) are available for undergraduate (seniors) and graduate students to
present research at conferences. Applicants need to e-mail copies of their papers to Dr. Abe Nisanci (ihnisanci@ualr.edu), along with the name
of their advisors, date and location of the conference, and proof of acceptance.
Finding Funding Sources
In addition to subscribing to INFOED (http://www.infoed.org) to receive customized funding email alerts, visit the following web
sites to search for funding sources:
Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships Available
Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships are available “to increase the diversity of the nations’ college and university faculties by
increasing their ethnic and racial diversity.” Stipends are $20,000 (pre-doctoral) for three years; $21,000 (dissertation) for one year;
and ($40,000) post doctoral for one year. See http://national-academies.org/fellowships.
Enrollment Statistics for Grant Proposals
The following text might be useful in proposals regarding “broadening participation” :
The 2006 Spring enrollment statistics (undergraduate and graduate) of UALR show that out of a total of 11,272 students, 3,207
are African-American (28.5%); 212 are Hispanic (2%); 77 are Native American (0.7%); 323 are Asian (2.9%); and 7,334 are White
(65.1%). These results show that the African-American enrollment in UALR’s programs rose from 1,250 students (11 %) in 1990
(the year the McNair Scholars Program was initiated at UALR) to 3,207students (28.5 %) in 2006. Furthermore, 63.5% of the
7,152 students at UALR are female. Much of the growth in the Graduate School’s enrollment is due to the increased enrollment
of African-Americans. Enrollment of Whites in the Graduate School also trended upward but at a slower rate. Hence, the proposed
effort has a strong potential of benefiting the students coming from underrepresented groups.
Reception for Campus Researchers Held
Over 150 people attended the Office of Research and Graduate Studies’ reception to honor faculty members and staff involved in
research at UALR. The reception in the Jack Stephens Arena included brief presentations by Vice Provost for Research Ibrahim Nisanci and Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs David Belcher. Chancellor Joel Anderson also met and greeted campus
investigators, who were able to network and exchange ideas with faculty and staff from all Colleges involved in research.
Grant Editing Services Available
Grant editing services are available on a limited basis for researchers who are submitting proposals to Federal or State agencies
with budgets over $100,000 and with full indirect cost recovery. Faculty and staff members who need editing help should contact
Dr. Abe Nisanci (ihnisanci@ualr.edu) or at (501) 569-8661. In order to take advantage of these services, investigators should submit final
drafts with budgets two to four weeks before deadlines.
Limits on Number of Submissions
Please alert Dr. Abe Nisanci (ihnisanci@ualr.edu) as early as possible if you are planning to submit a proposal to a
program which limits the number of submissions per institution.
Indirect Cost Recovery
- If a grantor pays indirect costs, these must be requested at the full rate established for UALR.
- If a grantor will not pay for indirect costs, that fact must be documented, and the documentation must accompany the proposal during the on-campus approval process.
- Any “giving away” of indirect cost income in an application must be approved in advance by the Chancellor.
Internal Review and Routing Sheets Required
All proposals must have properly signed “Internal Review and Routing Sheets” (coversheets) attached to them before being
processed. Accounts (funds) cannot be created without this signed form. Contact ORSP at 569-8474 if you need assistance in
preparing this sheet.

Graduate School Enrollment Tops 2,100
Enrollment in UALR’s Graduate School continues to grow, breaking all records during Fall 2006. Graduate student
enrollment officially rose to 2,155 students, the University’s highest graduate enrollment to date. This is an increase of
3.6% over last Fall’s headcount. Graduate student semester credit hours (SSCH) also continued to increase with this year’s
count of 13,760, an increase of 3.6% over Fall 2005. During Spring 2005, graduate enrollment increased 3.0%, delivering the
highest graduate Spring enrollment to date, and SSCHs also increase by 4.0% in Spring 2006.
New Graduate Programs Perform Well
Eight new graduate and certificate programs were introduced for Fall 2006, enrolling almost 90 new students. The programs and
specific enrollments are as follows:
The College of Business began offering two new graduate certificate programs in Accountancy and Taxation, which performed well during Fall registration with a headcount of 16 students.
The College of Science and Mathematics introduced the Master in Health Sciences degree program, which opened strongly with a headcount of 19 students.
The Donaghey College of Information Science and Systems Engineering began offering two new programs, a Master in Information Quality, with an enrollment of 25, and a graduate certificate in Systems Engineering.
The College of Professional Studies officially began offering the Communication Sciences and Disorders PhD program, jointly with UAMS and UCA, which enrolled 6 students.
The College of Education began offering two graduate certificate programs — one in Mobility with an enrollment of 7 students, and one in Reading with an enrollment of 15.
Graduate Students Receive National Awards
Two UALR graduate students have been recognized with national awards given by the National Association for Gifted Children
(NAGC). Alicia Cotabish received one out of five 2006 Doctoral Student Awards, and Gwendolynn Millen received one out
of five Graduate Student Awards. Dr. Ann Robinson, Director of UALR’s Center for Gifted Education, received the NAGC 2006 Service Award.
