InfoEd Key to Travel-Matching and Seed Grant Eligibility
In order to receive electronic funding alerts, researchers should identify key words when subscribing to InfoEd’s electronic notification system, SMARTS. Travel-matching funds and Seed Grants will only be available to applicants who have created a profile and identified keywords on InfoEd’s SMARTS (http://www.infoed.org/geniussearch/genius.asp). Instructions for subscribing are posted on the ORSP web site at http://www.ualr.edu/orsp/funding/smarts.shtml. 2006 Seed Grant Projects Presented
The eight recipients of 2006 ORGS Seed Grants, through their well-prepared presentations, demonstrated the wide spectrum of quality research taking place at UALR in a program set in Dickinson Auditorium on October 26th. As a result of their seed grant projects, all recipients either submitted or are about to submit proposals to external agencies for continued funding.

Deadline for Applying for 2007 Seed Grants Program Announced
Applications for ORGS Seed Grants for 2007 must be submitted to ORGS by February 2, 2007. See http://www.ualr.edu/orsp/funding/ualr_funding.shtml for information and instructions.

Travel Matching Funds Support Faculty in Fall 2006
A record number of faculty members applied for Travel Matching Funds. ORGS was able to support 82 faculty members. However, due to limited funds, international travel was limited to $400 per person.

Travel Matching Funds Deadline for Spring 2007 Released
Deadline for applying for travel matching funds for Spring 2007 is January 31, 2007. The application form can be found at http://www.ualr.edu/orsp/forms.shtml.

Grants.gov Launches System Changes for 2007
Beginning April 1, 2007, Grants.gov will launch a new system to improve peak processing loads for its site and for grant submissions. The new integrated system will support all grant applications with Adobe forms server, replacing the “PureEdge,” or IBM WorkPlace Forms, now used. However, a transition period will allow applicants to view both Adobe and PureEdge forms. A new Google search engine will also improve searching capacity for grant applications and web site content, and a Macintosh viewer will be available for users beginning in November 2006.

Institutional Review Board Announces Meeting Dates
The Institutional Review Board (IRB) will meet on November 9th and December 7th to consider submissions for approval. In order for projects to appear on the IRB agenda for either of these meetings, submissions to IRB for a full board review are due in the ORSP two weeks before the scheduled meeting date. New alternate IRB members include Mike Trammel from the College of Information Science and Systems Engineering Construction Management Department and Dr. Newton Sutter from the College of Education, Educational Leadership. Staff Member Elected to SRA International - Education Division
Angela Willis became the Secretary/Treasurer and President-Elect of the Education Division of the Society for Research Administrators (SRA) International at its recent 2006 annual meeting in Quebec. The Education Division is the largest division of SRA International, and Willis will serve two years before becoming Division President in 2008. Other ORSP staff members attending the SRA International meeting were Terry Steele and Wendy Eid, and all members brought back valuable tips for building NSF and NIH grants to help serve the campus community.

Graduate School News

Graduate Courses Tracked
As part of ORGS’s efforts toward quality control, the Graduate School has recently completed a database that cross-references graduate courses with faculty. This database will help ensure that graduate course offerings follow institutional policies. Dr. Robert Sikes, ORGS Associate Dean, continues to meet with graduate coordinators from each college to explore ways for improving the flow of information relating to graduate admissions and tracking. Dr. Sikes and Dr. Susan Hoffpauir, Bachelor of Social Work Program Director, will meet with curriculum committees of interested colleges to share information regarding processing curriculum requests through the undergraduate and graduate councils. Assistantship Applications Online
Students can now fill out and submit Graduate Assistantship Applications online on the Graduate School web site (http://www.ualr.edu/gradschool/forms.asp). As ORGS continues to strive in the University’s “paperless” direction, this advancement is first in a line of new procedures that will accommodate graduate students and faculty members on the web site. The application is user-friendly and contains the same information as the paper-based application. Students can upload resumes’ with a simple “click” of the submit button, and their applications arrive instantly in the Graduate School Office. Graduate Student Honor Society Induction Ceremony
The UALR Zeta Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Lambda, the National Honor Society for Graduate and Professional School students, is accepting applications for membership. To qualify, students must be in the top 35% of their programs and have outstanding records of leadership and community service. Applications and two letters of recommendation from faculty members are due at ORGS no later than November 8, 2006. Departments should nominate no more than seven students per program. Students may pick up applications from their program coordinators, ORGS, or the GSA/TEAMS office, or they can download applications online at http://www.gradschool.ualr.edu/aelapplication.pdf. The induction ceremony will take place Friday, December 1st, at 12:00 noon in the DSC. Contact Genti Borici or Glediana Rexha at 569-8659 for more information.

Intercollegiate Studies Institute Announces Graduate Fellowship Program
The Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI), a non-profit educational organization, has announced four fellowship opportunities for graduating seniors with applications due by February 15, 2007. These include:

  1. The William E. Simon Fellowship of $40,000, an unrestricted cash award for seniors who have demonstrated “passion, dedication, a high capacity for self-direction, and orginality in pursuit of a goal that will strengthen civil society”;
  2. The Richard M Weaver Fellowship of $5,000 and $1,000 book award for future professors who are dedicated to the idea of liberal education;
  3. The Western Civilization Fellowship of $20,000 for dissertation work related to the intellectual, economic, political, social, or religious heritage of Western Civilization; and
  4. The Henry Salvatori Fellowship of $10,000 for graduate work related to the American Founding.

Phi Kappa Phi Announces 2007 Fellowship and Award Competition
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is accepting applications for $5,000 Fellowships and $2,000 Awards of Excellence until February 1, 2007. Full-time Graduate students from all professional and graduate fields who are members of Phi Kappa Phi are encouraged to apply before the deadline. Announcements of Fellowship and Award of Excellence recipients will be announced no later than April 30, 2007. For more information and an application packet, visit http://www.PhiKappaPhi.org.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship Deadline
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s “Graduate Scholarship Program” due date has been changed. Graduate scholarship applications will now be due March 15, instead of May 1. Applications will be posted November 1st on the Foundation’s web site (http://www.jackkentcookefoundation.org).

Mini-Session For Potential CSAM Graduate Students Scheduled
The Graduate School and UALR Admissions Office continue with their series of “Getting into Graduate School” workshops for students, and the last session will focus on graduate degrees through the College of Science and Mathematics (CSAM). If you know students interested in pursuing CSAM graduate degrees, please have them call the Admissions Office at 569-3206 to register, or ask them to drop by DSC-C from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, November 9th, for the workshop.
