UALR Graduate Student Competes in NIST Challenge
Graduate student, Hemant Joshi, a doctoral candidate in Applied Science, recently became one of five student competitors to present work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Text Retrieval Conference in Gaithersburg, MD. From the 28 competitors, only 14 submitted opinionated results. NIST chose Joshi’s project as one of the five for presentation from the teams competing internationally for the Information Retrieval – Blog Track, where students identified and ranked over three million blog postings to determine public opinions on selected hot topics. The UALR entry was supported by Dr. Coskun Bayrak, Computer Science, and Dr. Xiaowei Xu, Information Science, and sponsored financially by the Department of Applied Science, the Graduate School Dean’s Office, and Dr. Bayrak.
