2007 Seed Grants Awarded
ORGS has awarded seven Seed Grants for 2007 to researchers in five colleges. Congratulations to the following researchers and their winning projects:

Radu Babiceanu: (Donaghey College of Information Science and Systems Engineering, Department of Systems Engineering): “Framework for engineering complex demand systems”

Gregory Barrett: (College of Education, Department of Educational Leadership): “Organizational and group resilience in historically black colleges and universities”

John Bush: (College of Science and Math, Department of Biology): “Location and function of a sorting nexin (SNX) protein in the unicellular organism Dictyostelium discoideum”

Jingbiao Cui: (College of Science and Math, Department of Physics and Astronomy): ”A novel approach to p-type doping of ZnO nanostructures at low temperature”

Cliff Franklin: (College of Professional Studies, Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology): “Comparison between two methods of ABR amplitude scaling in the estimation of hearing sensitivity: Validity and clinician confidence”

Guoliang Huang: (Donaghey College of Information Science and Systems Engineering: Department of Systems Engineering): “On-line bridge structural health monitoring by using multiple piezoelectric actuators/sensors”

Cang Ye: (Donaghey College of Information Science and Systems Engineering, Department of Applied Science): “Attitude estimation and range data registration for a robotic assistive device.”

NOAA and NSF Grant Proposals Sought
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has announced a broad request for applications for extramural research and innovative projects not normally funded through its competitive discretionary programs. Proposals will be evaluated on whether they address one or more of the five mission goals from the NOAA strategic plan and will be accepted until September 28, 2007. More information can be found at www.gpoaccess.gov/fr/ by searching for “page 7765”. The National Science Foundation’s Science of Science and Innovation Policy (SciSIP) program seeks collaborative project proposals. Analytical tools and model building are the two priority emphasis areas; applications are due May 22, 2007. Fulbright Scholar Competition for 2008-2009 Opened
The Fulbright Scholar Program, sponsored by the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is offering lecturing and research awards for the 2008-2009 academic year. Opportunities are available for faculty members, administrators, and independent scholars as well as for professionals from business or government. The Program offers awards in 45 different disciplines. Application deadlines for 2008-2009 awards are:

May 1, 2007 for Fulbright Distinguished Chair awards in Europe, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Israel, and Russia.

August 1, 2007 for Fulbright traditional lecturing and research grants worldwide.

November 1, 2007 for the summer German Studies Seminar and for spring/summer seminars in Korea and Japan for academic and international education administrators.

February 1, 2007 for the US-Germany International Education Administrators Program.
Rolling deadline for the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program.

Grants.gov Workshop Offered
ORSP will offer a workshop for researchers planning on submitting grant applications through Grants.gov from 11:00 a.m. to 12 Noon on Thursday, April 19, 2007, in the Graduate School Conference Room (Administration North Building, Third Floor). All future Federal agency grant submissions will be through Grants.gov, and researchers will be responsible for completing their own application packets. If you would like instruction on using Grants.gov, please plan to attend this event. Space is limited, so reserve your seat today by e-mailing Angela Willis.

UALR Undergraduate Research EXPO 2007 Announced
The second UALR Undergraduate Research Expo will take place on April 16, 2007. Last year’s Expo featured poster presentations by 58 students. The format for the Expo is poster presentations (not oral delivery). To obtain further information or an application for submission, visit the ORSP website at http://www.ualr.edu/orsp.

This year, top projects from the EXPO will be nominated for presentation in Washington, DC, at the annual “Posters on the Hill” event organized by the Council on Undergraduate Research. Please announce the event to your students.

BioNanoTox and Applications Research Meeting Planned
The UALR Biology Department will host the Second Annual BioNanoTox and Applications Research Meeting on Thursday and Friday, April 26 and 27, 2007, in 101 Fribourgh Hall. Researchers will present sessions on biology, nanotechnology, and toxicology from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Friday. A poster session and reception will also take place on Thursday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. Registration fees for the conference are $30 for students and $40 for non-students before April 10th, and $40 students/ $50 non-students, at the door. Graduate Research Forum Set
Students in humanities, social sciences, education administration, and sciences will give PowerPoint presentations of their research papers before a panel of judges at the Graduate Research Forum from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2007 in the Donaghey Student Center. Each 15-minute presentation will be followed by 5 minutes of questions and answers from participants.
