VOCAL ARTS

Students interested in the Vocal Arts can choose from a wide range of options at UALR. There are opportunities to perform as a member of our choral and opera ensembles, or to shine as a soloist in jazz ensemble, oratorio, opera or song recital. Our experienced, world-renowned faculty teaches private and class voice lessons, and leads classes in diction and performance skills. The Vocal Arts curriculum includes:

Class Voice – These courses are intended to introduce the student to the basic skills necessary to succeed as a singer in UALR's music program. Musicianship, vocal technique, languages and repertoire are taught in a group setting.

Private Voice Lessons – Private lessons offer the student more intensive training in breath support, vocal range-building, tone production and vocal repertoire. Voice majors take a one hour lesson weekly, and have access to a pianist to accompany their lessons.

Diction Classes – UALR offers singer's diction courses in four major languages (English, French, Italian and German), and introduces students to the International Phonetic Alphabet. These courses combine academic learning with performing practicums.

CHORAL – The UALR choral experience offers a variety of activities, musical styles, and study opportunities. All ensembles offer substantial grants-in-aid for qualified members and are open to students of any major upon audition.

Concert Choir is an auditioned select mixed choir that performs the more serious choral literature, both a cappella and accompanied.

Gospel Chorale is a mixed vocal ensemble of 40 to 50 members, dedicated to the study and performance of Gospel music. Audition is not required for membership; however, students seeking financial assistance must audition to demonstrate talent level, aural skills, and music-reading ability. Contact Dr. Sharon Young at (501) 569-8409 or email sxyoung@ualr.edu .

UALR Community Chorus is open to all UALR students, faculty, staff, and community members who enjoy singing, want to improve their voice and music reading skills and just wish to perform with an enthusiastic group of people. A formal audition is not required for participation. Contact Dr. Bevan Keating for further information, (501) 569-3499 or email btkeating@ualr.edu .

Women's Triple Trio is a small group of singers dedicated to performing traditional and contemporary repertoire for women's voices. This auditioned ensemble performs two to four times each semester. Contact Prof. Kira Keating by email kxkeating@ualr.edu.

OPERA – UALR offers both skill-based (Opera Workshop) and performance-based (Opera Performance) courses, enabling students to maximize their skills as singing actors.

UALR Opera Theatre offers performance and production opportunities in music theatre and opera. Two shows with sets, costumes and orchestra are produced each academic year. Each production offers substantial grants-in-aid for qualified cast members. For more information contact Professor Edward Crafts, (501) 569-3033.

Opera Workshop - Students study stage movement, acting for opera, stage combat, audition techniques, scene study, improvisation and much more. For more information contact Professor Edward Crafts, (501) 569-3033.
