Dr. Malay Mazumder
Malay Mazumder has been serving the University of Arkansas at
Little Rock (UALR) for more
than 25 years as a faculty member, and for about 10 years of which he
served as the Head of the Department of Electronics and Instrumentation
and as the Director of the University Of Arkansas Graduate Institute Of
Technology. Dr. Mazumder is now a University Professor of Applied
Science, and is engaged in teaching and research in the field of
particle technology and electrostatic engineering with applications to
material science, thin film coatings and biomedical engineering. He
received his Ph.D. in Instrumentation Science from the University of
Arkansas and worked on the development of Laser Doppler Velocimeter
(LDV).
Under a fellowship program at Harvard University, Dr. Mazumder performed research in the areas of aerosol science and particle technology, before joining UALR. He is now serving as the principal investigator for two NASA-funded projects on the assessment and mitigation of dust hazards related to robotic and human missions to the Moon and Mars. The first one is on the development of an instrument for characterizing the particle size and electrostatic properties of dust on the Moon and Mars and the second project is on the development of transparent electrodynamic shields for protecting solar panels, camera windows and extravehicular activity (EVA) suits for space missions The particle size and charge analyzer for Mars and Moon dusts and a nanoparticle analyzer for studying electrostatic self-assembly processes (under an NSF project) are both based on the LDV-based Electronic Single Particle Relaxation Time (E-SPART) analyzer patented by Dr. Mazumder for which he received the 1988 R&D 100 Award.
He serves as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Particulate Science and Technology: An International Journal. Dr. Mazumder is also active in community service, including serving as a Commissioner of the Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission, under appointment by Gov. Mike Huckabee. Dr. Mazumder is now serving MIT as a visiting professor collaborating with Prof. Markus Zahn of the Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems on his research projects.
