Minor in Middle Eastern Studies

Krista Lewis

Dr. Krista Lewis is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology.  She has been conducting fieldwork in the Middle East since 1993 and has lived, worked, and traveled across the region including Yemen, Oman, Jordan, Palestine, Israel, and Egypt.  She received her PhD from the Department of Anthropology at the University of Chicago in 2005.

Dr. Lewis conducts archaeological and ethnographic research on the way people use food, landscape, and the environment as tools for political and social negotiations in daily life.  For information about Dr. Lewis’ archaeological project in Yemen, visit the UALR Yemen Archaeological Project page.  She is also interested in diaspora communities of Arabic speaking people, perceptions of Arabs in western society, and portrayals of the Middle East in the media.

She teaches archaeology and cultural anthropology including a course on contemporary Middle Eastern cultures.  Dr. Lewis also speaks fluent Arabic and coordinates UALR’s Arabic classes.
