Program Goals

1. Specialized Expertise indicates the expectation that the graduates will demonstrate a commitment to the education of young children, and possess knowledge and skills in teaching and learning, assessment and identification, and instructional planning, including attention to different racial, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds.

2. Communication skills indicate the expectation that the graduates will develop and maintain effective oral, written, and technological communication skills. They will be reflective in their communication approach to different families, professional, individuals, and communities.

3. Professional Development indicates the expectation that the graduates will continue to systematically advance their professional knowledge and skills in response to the changing needs of the communities, families, and children they serve.

4. Diversity indicates the expectation that the graduates have a strong commitment to a diverse democracy and prepares candidates to effectively and compassionately work with and for all individuals regardless of race, color, sex, marital status, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, disability, gender identification, sexual orientation, family structures, political affiliation, or socio-economic class.

Additional admission requirements:
1. Formal admission to UALR Graduate School
2. Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75*
3. Completion of the following courses or their equivalents with a grade of “C” or better: RHET 1311 and 1312; MATH 1315 or MATH 1302 or comparable course
4. Official passing Praxis I scores submitted to Licensure Advisor in DKSN 323
5. Application form submitted to DKSN 323
6. FBI Background check (Appropriate forms must be submitted and notarized)

*If the applicant does not meet this GPA requirement, then the application may apply for conditional admission if the GPA is between 2.5 and 2.75 and a passing score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Visit with the Rene Carson in the Dean’s Office (501-569-3113) for details.
