MA in Professional and Technical Writing
Because writing is a cross-curricular study, we welcome applicants from any academic discipline or profession who have the aptitude and interest necessary for success in a graduate program in nonfiction writing, nonfiction editing, and technical writing. The pages in this site explain what a Master of Arts in Professional and Technical Writing (PTW) can do for you, help you understand the PTW curriculum, and help you complete the application process. Please contact us with any questions or concerns you may have at the address and phone numbers below.
Would you like to try a few courses before completing a full program application? Consider applying as a non-degree-seeking graduate student. If you try some summer or fall courses and enjoy them, you can then apply for full admission in a later semester.
Application Deadlines for Summer and Fall 2012: The Graduate Committee reads applications 3-4 times each semester and once in the summer. If you would like to begin taking courses in our program in either May or August 2012, please submit your application materials by one of the following deadlines:
February 20 to be voted on during the March 5 Graduate Committee meeting.
March 19 to be voted on during the April 2 Graduate Committee meeting. It is very much to your advantage to submit your application materials on or before this date. If you are accepted by Nov. 7, you can then be advised and register for courses at the same time as all the other students in our program. This gives you a better shot at finding openings in the classes you want for the coming semester, especially if you plan to take online courses.
April 23 to be voted on during the May 7 Graduate Committee meeting. This is the last chance to be admitted for the Summer 2012 semester.
July 23 to be voted on during the August 6 Graduate Committee meeting. This is the last chance to be admitted for the Fall 2012 semester.
You will be notified of our decision within two weeks of the meeting date.
