Life Interrupted for teachers is a workshop designed to introduce teachers to curriculum materials about the experiences of Japanese Americans in WWII Arkansas. Curriculum materials were developed by master teachers from around Arkansas and are correlated with state curriculum frameworks. The 4th/5th grade curriculum materials are designed for language arts, visual arts, and social studies. The units for grades 7-9 cover the camps at Rohwer and Jerome through the five themes of geography; another focuses on Arkansas history. Finally, the high school unit is based in U.S. history and civics and revolves around the essential question, "What are the responsibilities of individuals to uphold human rights". This unit places the camps in the larger context of civil rights in U.S. history. During the workshop, hands-on activities from each unit will be demonstrated and teachers will become familiar with the content information. Strategies for teaching with primary source documents and integrating reading and social studies will be presented. Teachers will receive curriculum materials.
Dr. Kristin Mann from the UALR history department and/or Life Interrupted project master teachers or curriculum field testers are available to present workshops around the state. Contact Dr. Mann at kdmann@ualr.edu for more information or to schedule a workshop (hour-long, half-day or full day workshops available).
