Week 4: February 6

Update from
Your
Professor

Welcome to your 4th week!

Last week we:

  • computed the mean, mode, and median and learned about the relationship between them and which measure of central tendency is best for a given situation
  • learned what happens to the mean if a constant is added to or subtracted from every score or if every score is multiplied by or divided by a constant
  • examined outlier
  • constructed a box-and-whisker plot
  • used SAS to measure central tendency

This week we will learn:

  • how to compute the sum of squares, variance, and standard deviation
  • the difference between a biased and unbiased estimator
  • about the normal distribution and the area under the normal curve
  • how to standardize a normal distribution
  • about z scores and t scores and how to compute both
  • how to use SAS to determine standard deviation

Lesson Preparation

Each week this section will provide you with any necessary material that will be essential for you completing assignments.

Download the notes, have them read, and be prepared to ask questions:

Review last week's lesson by completing the Central Tendency Review Quiz before moving on to the lesson this week.
