Week 1: January 20

Events This Week
At the Library

WELCOME! READ THIS FIRST!!!  Each weekly lesson will be formatted into 3 web pages. You are currently viewing page 1 of week 1. Page 1 of each week will always begin with an outline of the 3 web pages such as the outline that follows. Please notice the 3 web pages for each week are organized into 1) an introduction to the week's tasks, 2) the content for that week, and 3) a reminder of what should have been completed for the week and a peek at what is coming next week. PLEASE try to become familiar with this format. Use the links at the bottom of each page so that you don't miss anything.

PAGE 1: (what you are currently viewing)

PAGE 2: [there is a link at the very bottom of page 1 (the page you are currently viewing) that will take you to page 2]

PAGE 3:(there is a link at the very bottom of page 2 that will take you to page 3)

A Message from the Head Librarian

Welcome to Research Practicum! Make sure you 1) explore the library links provided at the top of each page and 2) read the message in the Lobby of the Library (course home page) before you proceed.

If you haven't already, please look over the course syllabus at the Information Desk (syllabus). Also, the Events Calendar (course schedule) will let you know what is expected in the upcoming weeks.

Every Monday at about 5:00pm, the "Events This Week at the Library" will be updated with a new 3 page lesson for that week. This also means that Thursday is the day that your assignments are due from the previous week by 5:00pm. It's a good idea to print these 3 pages each week so that you can refer to them if the server goes down (which it will... it always does).

Our Library Staff is small but very efficient, effective, and here to provide you with the ultimate experience.  I, Dr. William Pearson, am referred to as the Head Librarian in many of the lessons. IF YOU HAVE ANY TECHNOLOGY PROBLEMS, call Computer Services. I'm all about content, they're all about technology!

The most efficient way to contact me is through email wfpearson@ualr.edu . If you need to come to face to face office hours PLEASE make an appointment first! Since I do not have an office we will have to make arrangements to book the conference room in Educational Leadership.

Two areas of advice to be successful in this course:

1) Read everything for each weekly lesson including the links provided. This is the only way I have to communicate to you what I would have said in a class lecture. As you read the content, you will come across new vocabulary. If you are not sure what a word means, use your APA text or any educational research text as a reference. Look up the words and read the passages about it in your text book. You need to be self-motivated in order to do well. You must read the information or you cannot expect to learn anything.

2) Make sure you complete your work on time. Do not fall behind in this class. When I ask you to begin looking up articles, I mean for you to start right then. Do not wait or you will not be able to complete the class. I will not give an incomplete to anyone who hasn't completed at least 70% of the course with a satisfactory grade and a legitimate medical excuse. This is the university's rule and I stick by it, so do not let yourself fall behind!

Welcome to the class and good luck!

Dr. Pearson

Some tasks that need to be completed before you proceed to page 2 of this week's lesson:

Task #1:
You will need to give your computer additional capabilities to fully participate in this course. You will need to have :

on your computer.  Many of you may already have this.  Check before you take the time to download and install it.

Task #2:

It is important that you activate your UALR email account and  understand what your username and password are.  It will be necessary for you to use your username and password during various parts of the course.  Therefore, figure it out NOW!  It is important that I am always able to get in touch with you when necessary. In most cases I will do this by email. You must check your UALR email account on a regular basis or you will miss important information needed for the course.

To assist you, there is a UALR webpage available for you to refer to in order to get help with technology. This guide will explain your username and password as well as other things you may need throughout the semester so download it (click the link) and keep it handy.
