J-1 Visa Categories

J-1 CATEGORIES:

  • Research Scholars
  • Short-Term Scholars
  • Visiting Faculty

RESEARCH SCHOLARS

A Research Scholar is in the U.S. for the purpose of conducting research, observing, or consulting in connection with a research project.  The maximum time allowed in a program is five (5) years.

Important Note:  If a visitor has been in the U.S. as J-1 Research Scholar on or after November 18, 2006, they are not able to begin a new program as a J-1 Research Scholar until they have been out of J-1 status for 24 months.

SHORT-TERM SCHOLARS

A Short-Term Scholar is in the U.S. for the purpose of lecturing, observing, consulting, training, or demonstrating specific skills.  The maximum time allowed in this program is six months.  UALR typically sponsors J-1 visas only for people who hold a Ph.D. or Masters degree or are working towards one of these.

VISITING FACULTY

Visiting Faculty enter the U.S. for the purpose of lecturing, observing, and demonstrating specific skills.  Visiting Faculty are mostly invited to teach course(s) for a semester up to a year in a specific program.  Departments generally require approval from the Provost office before extending this type of J-1 status at UALR. These positions can be sponsored or non-sponsored by UALR and generally require a Masters or Ph.D. degree before the invitation is offered.
