The following stats come from a campus-wide survey conducted at UALR in April 2005.

Alcohol:

  • 44% of the students surveyed (about 50% were over 21) had not consumed any alcohol in the past 30 days.
  • 50% of those under 21 had not consumed alcohol in the past 30 days.

  • 42% of all students would rather not have alcohol available at parties they attend.
  • If they do drink alcohol, most UALR students are "low risk drinkers." High risk or binge drinking is defined nationally as consuming 5 or more drinks in one sitting for men and 4 or more for women.
  • 73% of the students did not drink 5 or more drinks in one sitting.
  • Most UALR students don't drink dangerously!

Marijuana:

  • 82% of UALR students don't smoke marijuana.

Tobacco:

  • 78% had not smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days.

Sex and the College Student:

A survey of college students 18-24 years old, released in 1997 by the CDC, found the following:

  • 20% had never had sexual intercourse.*
  • 45% had not had sexual intercourse in the past 30 days.*
  • * Sexual intercourse was defined as vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse, or oral genital sex.

Almost 1 in 4 college students are or have been infected with a STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection).

The most common STI's among college students are chlamydia, HPV (genital warts) and genital herpes.

Approximately 2-5% of condoms tear during use. The majority of these failures are caused by human error, which can include among other things, not using enough lubricant, creating microscopic tears with rings or sharp or jagged fingernails, not leaving room at the tip, or using old condoms.
