Master of Education in Gifted and Talented Education

The masters of education in teaching the gifted and talented provides specialized knowledge and competencies needed to meet the challenge of providing an appropriate education for children and adolescents with gifts and talents. Students in the program work with an advisor to design a study plan tailored to their specific needs and career goals. The MEd is a 36 hour program.
Admission Requirements
- Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 (4.0 scale) or 3.0 in the last 60 hours; or Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a 3.0 GPA
- favorable recommendation from faculty in the program
- completed College of Education Biographical Data Sheet
- valid teacher license; contact program coordinator for exceptions
Program Requirements
The curriculum is arranged in a structured, developmental sequence that builds teaching and administrative skills reflecting best practices in the field. It explores a variety of theoretical frameworks for understanding talent development, as well as experiential learning and practical application. Courses are offered evenings, weekends, summers, and online to accommodate the program’s mix of full– and part-time students from all regions in Arkansas.
Practica and internships in specialized programs for gifted children and youth provide valuable real-world experience in designing and implementing appropriate curricula and administrative services. The Center for Gifted Education administers a variety of such programs that serve as practicum and internship sites for the licensing and graduate education degree programs in Gifted Education.
The UALR graduate program in gifted education is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. It is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Licensure
The licensure program of study in Gifted and Talented Education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock meets the requirements for Arkansas Licensure in Gifted and Talented Education. It is a K-8 and/or 7-12 licensure attached to an existing license in general or special education. The Additional Licensure Plan (ALP) in this brochure should be discussed with the program coordinator who assists students in developing study plans that meet licensure requirements. Licensure is an 18-hour program.

- educational cooperative supervisors in gifted education
