Study Sheet - Internet:Using the World Wide Web I. Basic Internet Info 2. Be able to list a couple of basic Internet functions such as Email, World Wide Web (WWW), Chat, Instant Messenging, File Transfer Protocol(FTP). 3. Know that the Internet is a general concept, different from the World Wide Web, and different from specific companies such as Compuserve and America Online. II. Basic WWW Info 2. Know that a Browser is also called a Web Client, and is the software that’s used on a personal computer to view Web pages on the World Wide Web. 3. Know that a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the address for a web page. 4. Know that Hypertext is the highlighted text that "Links" you to more information. III. Using the typical Browser (such as the Netscape Browser, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or FireFox) 1. Know how to go to a web page by entering the URL address. 2. Know how to find the UALR home page. 3. Know how to go to the instructor's Computer Literacy web site. 4. Know how to go forward & back (to view the next page or the previous page) 5. Know how to tell if a Web page is still loading, and when it's completed. 6. Know how to stop loading a Web page, if you change your mind or if it takes too long. 7. Know how to look for computer information using WEBOPEDIA, WHATIS, and HowStuffWorks. 8. Know how to reset the home page for the browser you're using. 9. Know how to save a "Favorite" for future reference. 10. Know how to do a search / find on the page you're currently viewing. IV. Using Internet Search Engines 2. Know the names of some popular search engines: Yahoo, AltaVista, Excite, Lycos, Hotbot, Switchboard (people searches). Be prepared to use one of them during the test. 3. Know how to force a search keeping two words together, such as "Little Rock". 4. Know how to force a search to eleminate a word from the results, using the minus (-) sign. |
