1. Networks and the Internet.
Network - A collection of computer devices connected to each other in a variety of ways.
Internet - A collection of local and wide area networks connecting computer devices.
1969 - The Internet started in with ARPANET
1991 - The World Wide Web started with Tim Berners Lee's CERN project
1994 - The first browser from Marc Andreeson, Univ. Of Illinois Supercomputer Ctr
2. IP Numbers - a unique no. for any computer using the internet
3. Domain Names

5. ISP - Internet Service Providers
- Companies or organizations sell or provide access to the Internet, such as the university
- Commercial ISPs charge a fee: Aristotle, IPA, SWBell, AOL , MSN, Comcast
- Other Organizations: Universities, libraries, companies
- Dialup Modems - transfer speed is 56 thousand bits per second (kbps) - you see v.90
- Broadband - faster - DSL and Cable Modem - faster - about 1.544 millions of bits per second (mbps)

There are special purpose search engines such as switchboard.com for "People Search", and Mapquest.com, for maps. There are sites for buying: Academic superstore.com, buy.com. There are sites where you can sell your textbooks - bigfoot.com, booksvalue.com, bookbyte.com, amazon.com, half.com
