Exercise - Files and Storage (Not for Points)

  1. Give an example of an MS Word File Name for a Resume. ______________


  2. Use Start-Search (Find) to find files (*.txt, Word.*, Wordpad.exe)

  3. Write the path for a file named Wordpad.exe in a folder Windows on drive C: ______________________________

  4. OPTION: If you have access to a floppy drive - Use FORMAT to format a 3.5 inch floppy disk in your floppy drive (A:)

    A disk must sometimes be formatted prior to it's initial use, although disks may be purchased already formatted.

    Note that the Format command *Erases* the entire disk. Be careful which disk you specify. *Only* specify the disk you wish to format (in this case, the disk in the A: drive).

    1. Open My Computer
    2. Right click on 3 1/2 Floppy(A:)
    3. Left-click on Format
    .

  5. Use PAINT to create a PAINT file (Start-Programs-Accessories-Paint). Save it as a 24-bit BMP (Bitmap) file in "My Pictures"on the C Drive.

  7. Save it again (with a different name!) as a 256 color (thats 8-bit) BMP file. Note you need to change the name, as well as the "File Type" (extension).


  8. Create a folder on your diskette called "Paint Files" and save the picture again there.


  9. Use WORDPAD to create a Wordpad File (Start-Programs-Accessories-WordPad) . Save it in My Documents as a DOC (Word Document) or RTF (Rich Text Format)

  11. Find these files under the Start Button (My Documents or My Pictures) and view them with the View option "Filmstrip".


  12. Move or Copy the files that you saved in My Documents and My Pictures on the C: Drive to your floppy disk (A:) (Right-Click on the file)


  13. Delete files. Delete any files you put on the C: drive (Desktop or My Documents) by: 1) dragging them to the Recycle Bin, or 2)selecting them and pressing DEL, or 3) right-clicking on the file and choose Delete. Then, empty the recycle bin.
