CPSC1370 - Computer Literacy
EXERCISE - WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM
(Windows XP and other versions)

Step 1 - Getting Started:
  1. On or Off? Make sure your computer is turned on, and is running.
  2. Desktop - Your desktop screen may look differ from others, this is normal. Identify the parts of the screen: desktop, icons, taskbar, start button.
  3. Start Button - Notice on the screen the Task Bar & Start Button
  4. Mouse - Try moving the mouse, clicking, double-clicking, dragging (click and hold and move). Notice left and right mouse buttons. There may be a small wheel.
  5. Click Start and Open My Computer window
  6. Parts of the window - Title Bar, Menu Bar, Toolbars, Status Bar, Scroll Bars
  7. Buttons in upper right corner of window - Minimize, Maximize/Restore, Close
  8. Restart the computer - Start button; options are Turn Off (Shut Down), Restart
  9. Login with username provided in class (on classroom computers).
Step 2 - Customize the computer window (Start Button then My Computer)
  1. Click the View menu - then toolbars. Make sure there's a check by the standard buttons, address bar and the status bar
  2. Make sure the following are checked under View:
    • View - Status Bar (should have a check beside it)
    • View - Toolbars - (standard, address)
    • View - Icons
  3. Try a different view option: View - Details
Step 3 - Maximize, Restore, Resize and Move a Window (My Computer)
  1. Buttons: Click Maximize Button then Restore Button. Same button.
  2. Click Minimize button. It clears the screen but is on the taskbar.
  3. Click My Computer button on the taskbar to reopen.
  4. Move the Edges: Window must be in Restore not Maximize. Stretch window wider, then make taller.
  5. Move Window: Point to the title bar and drag the window to a different place.
Step 4 - Help Commands
  1. Start Button - Help
  2. Fill-in Box at top, Help topics on Left
Step 5 - To Shut Down the Computer
  1. Click Start button (or press Windows keyboard button) - Shut Down
  2. The options are: - Stand by, Turn Off (Shut Down), Restart
  3. Choose Turn Off (Shut Down)
  4. When screen says it's ok to turn off computer, turn the power switch on SYSTEM BOX off. Each component may have a different on/off switch. Some computers automatically turn the power off. Check for a light on the computer.
  5. Wait about 5-10 seconds, then turn it back on by pushing power switch once.
