Step 1 - Getting Started:
- On or Off? Make sure your computer is turned on, and is running.
- Desktop - Your desktop screen may look differ from others, this is normal. Identify the parts of the screen: desktop, icons, taskbar, start button.
- Start Button - Notice on the screen the Task Bar & Start Button
- Mouse - Try moving the mouse, clicking, double-clicking, dragging (click and hold and move). Notice left and right mouse buttons. There may be a small wheel.
- Click Start and Open My Computer window
- Parts of the window - Title Bar, Menu Bar, Toolbars, Status Bar, Scroll Bars
- Buttons in upper right corner of window - Minimize, Maximize/Restore, Close
- Restart the computer - Start button; options are Turn Off (Shut Down), Restart
- Login with username provided in class (on classroom computers).
Step 2 - Customize the computer window (Start Button then My Computer)
- Click the View menu - then toolbars. Make sure there's a check by the standard buttons, address bar and the status bar
- Make sure the following are checked under View:
- View - Status Bar (should have a check beside it)
- View - Toolbars - (standard, address)
- View - Icons
- Try a different view option: View - Details
Step 3 - Maximize, Restore, Resize and Move a Window (My Computer)
- Buttons: Click Maximize Button then Restore Button. Same button.
- Click Minimize button. It clears the screen but is on the taskbar.
- Click My Computer button on the taskbar to reopen.
- Move the Edges: Window must be in Restore not Maximize. Stretch window wider, then make taller.
- Move Window: Point to the title bar and drag the window to a different place.
Step 4 - Help Commands
- Start Button - Help
- Fill-in Box at top, Help topics on Left
Step 5 - To Shut Down the Computer
- Click Start button (or press Windows keyboard button) - Shut Down
- The options are: - Stand by, Turn Off (Shut Down), Restart
- Choose Turn Off (Shut Down)
- When screen says it's ok to turn off computer, turn the power switch on SYSTEM BOX off. Each component may have a different on/off switch. Some computers automatically turn the power off. Check for a light on the computer.
- Wait about 5-10 seconds, then turn it back on by pushing power switch once.
