CPSC1370 Class #1: Getting Started with Windows
1. Information on class - syllabus, textbooks, grading, attendance, floppy disks, USB Flash/jump/thumb drive

3. Getting Started in our classroom / Lab - (EIT 325)
  • HARDWARE - HP Compatible "thin clients" (IBM Compatibles) with USB and other ports, connecting to computers elsewhere in the building, through software called VMWare.
  • SYSTEM SOFTWARE - (Operating System) - Windows 7
  • APPLICATION SOFTWARE - Microsoft Office 2007, Internet Explorer, and other.
  • NETWORK - The lab computers are referred to as "thin clients" are are actually very limited versions of the microcomputers you normally might use. They use software from other server computers, and share a printer in the back of the room. You sign onto the thin client with a username/password. Then you enter another username/pwd when connecting to the server downstairs, through VMWare software. A third login is needed to satisfy the campus network security. May need to enter Control-Alt-Del.
  • USERNAME vs NETID - UALR assigns several other logins, which you see when you login to BOSS.UALR.EDU with your T-number & pin, and look at the "Personal" choice. Use a "Username" lto login to Email, also for these classroom machines. But to login to "Blackboard", use your "NetID".
4. What is a User Interface? The Means of dialogue between you and the computer.
  • GUI (Graphics User Interface) - Point-and-Click with a Mouse - using pictures or graphical icons
  • As opposed to Command driven (or Shell) interface or Menu driven interface
5. Windows versions, such as Windows 7 and Windows XP
  • new versions: Windows 7, Vista, Windows XP Pro, (also Home Edition, Media Center, Tablet, 64 bit)
  • old versions: Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME
  • Network/Server Versions: Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows Server
  • Service Packs - free updates to Windows operating system

6. Windows Desktop and Screen Elements
  • Desktop and Icons (Graphical objects) - Recycle Bin, My Computer, Browser(Internet Explorer), etc
  • Mouse Pointer - arrow, I-beam, etc. Moves with the mouse.
  • My Computer Icon - direct access to storage and files
  • Task Bar at the bottom- Start Button, Quick Launch Icons, System Tray (Notification Area)
  • Multitasking - You can do several tasks at once, it shows on Task Bar
  • Mouse Operations - Point, Click, Right-Click, Double Click, Drag, Right-Drag
7. Parts of a Window (for example Browser window)
  • Address bar - displays the "address" for getting to a file or web site (in the "Browser")
  • Left Pane - in My Computer, a pane at the left that gives info
  • Menus and Menu Bar - bar at the top of a window, showing options such as FIle, Edit, etc.
  • Screen Tip - info displayed when you move the mouse to an icon
  • Status Bar - bar at the bottom of a window, giving info on what you're viewing
  • Tool bar - various kind of tool bars show things to do
  • My Computer - storage devices
8. Resize, Move, and Scroll Windows
  • Close Button - an "X" which closes the window
  • Minimize, Maximize/ Restore)
  • Title Bar - bar at the top of a window, giving the name of the window or program
  • Scroll Bars - Vertical and Horizontal
9. START-SHUTDOWN - Process of shutting down or restarting(Rebooting) the computer
  • Cold Boot - Computer's off (cold, no power). Turn it on. (Push on-off switch)
  • Warm Boot (Restart)- Computer's on. How to: Start-Shutdown-Restart; or Control-Alt-Delete.
