EXERCISE: More on Electronic Mail

Note: There are three categories of email, depending on where it is stored: (1) Serial/Telnet Email, plain black and white, and stored on a central computer; (2) Popmail, a GUI interface, stored on your home/office computer; and (3) Webmail, accessed with a Browser and stored at a web site computer.

1. UALR'S NEW WEB EMAIL (MAIL.UALR.EDU)

  • Look up email addresses using www.ualr.edu. Select either the Current Students or Faculty/Staff option, then select UALR Email Addresses.

2. POPMAIL (stored on your personal computer):

  • Check for Email clients, including Eudora, at www.tucows.com or www.eudora.com. How would you download the Eudora email client?
  • Look in Start-Programs to see if your computer has any of the following Email clients on it: Microsoft Outlook contains additional "Groupware" features, such as a calendar and a notepad. MS Outlook Express is a streamlined version of Outlook.

3. OTHER WEB EMAIL (stored on some web mail server, not your personal computer): Go to a Web Mail site:
  • Hotmail.com
  • Eudoramail.com
  • Mail.com
  • Yahoomail.com
Many of the search engines have free WebMail also.

4. FREE ISP - Check on the Free ISP at www.netzero.com. Note that you can do a Yahoo search for Free ISP and find others.

5. CHAT ROOMS - Do a Yahoo search for Chat Room web sites and info.
