FAQ--Frequently Asked Questions
This page contains answers to common questions handled by our support staff,
along with some tips and tricks that we have found useful and presented here as
questions.
Note: In these answers we will follow a few shorthand
conventions for describing user-interface procedures. Key combinations will be
presented like this: Ctrl+Alt+Delete, which means that you should press and hold
down the Control key, the Alt key, and the Delete key at the same time. Menu
selections will be presented like this: File->Open, which means that you
should open the File menu, and then make the Open selection.

What is the FSRR?
The Faculty Staff Resource Room (FSRR) is a cutting edge, multimedia computer
lab reserved for faculty and staff use. We have many high end computers and
tools for you to use. The resource room is an excellent place to develop a web
page, create presentations, create a CD-Rom, and learn how to use computers more
efficiently.
Who can use the FSRR and its services?
The FSRR and its services are ONLY available to faculty and staff. Students
are allowed to use the FSRR only under special limited circumstances.
What are the hours for the FSRR?
The FSRR is open Monday through Friday from 8:00-5:00. Special hours can be
arranged for special projects.

What equipment is available for check-out from the FSRR?
The Faculty Staff Resource Room has many items that can be loaned out on a
short term basis. These currently include:
- Digital Still Cameras
- Digital Projector
- VHS Video Camera
- Overhead Projector
- 4 Laptops
- 2 P.C. (min 266 Mhz Pentium 2)
- 2 Macintosh
How does one borrow a piece of equipment from the FSRR?
Any of our "to loan" usually can be requested for immediate use on a first
come, first serve basis. However, it is almost always necessary to reserve
items. We keep a two week calender and can reserve any piece of equipment from
1/2 hour to over the weekend. Some items are not available for extended loan
out. For details, please call us at 569-8706.
Any item must be signed out at check out and will be checked back in
upon return.
How does one start a web page?
- Is the web page for a department, project, or an organization?
Yes?
The head of the department or organization must apply for an Athena account.
No? Your personal Athena account will be the home for your web page.
- After the account has been granted, a www subdirectory must be created
using the command
$ Create/Dir [.www]
- Place the HTML documents in the www directory. One of the easiest way to
accomplish this is by FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or using Fetch on the MAC.
An easier method is to create the HTML documents on the Vax using a text
editor such as EDT or LSE.
The main page MUST be named index.html or
index.htm
- Department page? Send email to WEBMASTER@UALR.EDU requesting a link be
added to UALR homepage. Include in the message the department and account
name.
Personal page? Fill out online form at http://www.ualr.edu/www/addhome.html
Will there be someone in the lab to assist me when I need help?
There is usually a lab aid available in the lab, however, to insure
the proper assistance will be available call and make an appointment.
