(Bachelor's Required)
Purpose: Sponsored by the Rotary Foundation "to further
international understanding and friendly relations among people
of different countries." UALR students have a very good record
of winning these awards.
Amount and Length of Award: The scholarship sponsored by the
local district is for one academic year (usually nine months),
and covers one month of intensive language training,
transportation costs, tuition and fees, and living costs, the
non-transportation component not to exceed $21,500.
Eligibility:
Citizenship: U.S.
Marital Status: No requirement.
GPA: Although there is no formal cut-off, you should have
at least a 3.0.
Age and/or Class: There is no formal age requirement; the
sponsoring local district requires that you have a
bachelor's by the time you assume the scholarship.
Career Plans and/or Degrees Sought: Almost any field of
study is eligible. Be aware that since the award is for one
academic year only, you likely will be unable to earn a
degree in that time.
Experience: Applicants whose native language is other than
that of the country in which they propose to study, must
submit evidence of competence in the host country's
language, and pass a language proficiency exam determined by
the Rotary Foundation. Some preference is given to
applicants who want to study in non-English speaking
countries.
Since the Rotary Foundation sees scholarship winners
primarily as cultural ambassadors (recipients are obligated
to give presentations to Rotary clubs and other civic
organizations in the host country and in the U.S. upon
return), you will have to have a personality and record of
involvement in activities that demonstrate your ability to
function as such. Academic distinction alone will not
suffice.
Spouses, children, and grandchildren of Rotarians are not
eligible.
Important Features of the Written Application: Includes "a brief
autobiography describing your academic strengths and challenges,
career objectives and other significant events in your life," and
"a detailed statement of why you are applying for a scholarship,
what your proposed field of study will be, and how this relates
to your future plans." You must also include in the latter an
explanation of your choice of preferred institution of study,
which will require some research on your part. You must also
submit your own translations of the essays into the language of
the country in which you will be studying.
Two letters of recommendation are required.
Application Process and Deadlines: Initial application is made
through a local Rotary club, which endorses candidates to compete
at the district level. District-endorsed applications are
forwarded to the Rotary Foundation, which grants final approval.
Interviews may be conducted at the club and district levels. You
should enquire about this scholarship early, as it has a very
long lead time; the application is due almost fifteen months
before tenure of the award begins.
