(For Undergraduate Study)
Purpose: Do not be fooled by the name; the scholarship
is not
for would-be politicians! Established as an official memorial to
the service of Barry Goldwater, the scholarship seeks to provide
a continuing source of highly qualified individuals in the areas
of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.
Amount and Tenure of Award: Covers tuition, fees,
books, and
room and board, up to a maximum of $7,000 annually, for a maximum
of two years.
Eligibility:
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or resident
alien.
Applications from the latter must include a letter of intent
to obtain U.S. citizenship.
Marital Status: No requirement.
GPA:Applicants must have at least a 3.0 and be in
the
upper fourth of their class.
Age and/or Class:There is no age requirement.
At time of
application, candidates must be sophomores or juniors.
"Sophomore" is defined as "a student who plans two more
years of full-time undergraduate study," and "junior" is
defined as "a student who plans one more year of full-time
undergraduate study." (Sophomore applicants receive two
years of funding; junior applicants receive one.)
Career Plans and/or Degrees Sought: Must be pursing
a
career and degree in the natural sciences, engineering or
mathematics. Recipients must expect to pursue advanced
degrees upon completion of the undergraduate degree.
Students planning to study medicine are eligible only if
they a plan a research career rather than a career in
private practice.
Important Features of the Written Application: Applicants
must include a statement "detailing how their academic program and
their overall educational plans will prepare them for their
chosen career goal."
Application Process and Deadlines: Must be nominated by
the UALR campus representative. Up to 300 scholarships are awarded
annually. Interested students must begin the application process
early in the fall.
