Purpose: Created by U.S. Congress in 1946 "to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchanges." Funds study abroad.
Amount and Length of Award: Awards vary. Full Grants "generally provide round trip transportation; language or orientation course, where appropriate; tuition, in some cases; book and research allowance; maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country; and supplemental health and accident insurance. Travel Grants are available to Belgium/Luxembourg, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Korea, and Taiwan, to supplement a student's own funds for study for an academic year.
Eligibility:
Citizenship: U.S.
Marital Status: No requirement.
GPA: No formal requirement, but an academic record of some distinction is necessary to be competitive.
Age and/or Class: No age requirement. Generally, applicants must hold a B.A. or the equivalent before the beginning date of the grant. Applicants without a B.A. or equivalent, but who have extensive professional and/or experience in fields in which they wish to pursue a project may be considered. Four years of professional study and/or experience meets the eligibility requirement for applicants in the creative and performing arts.
Career Plans and/or Degrees Sought: All degree areas are eligible. Note, however, that one academic year abroad usually will not suffice to complete a degree.
Experience: Applicants must have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country to communicate with the people and to carry out the proposed study.
Important Features of the Written Application: The application is quite lengthy, and requires a very specific proposal of a project or a plan of study.
Application Process: There is an annual competition. Final selection is made by the presidentially-appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
Deadlines: The campus deadline is mid September, so interested applicants should contact the campus representative no later than the spring of the year in which they wish to apply.
