They were married by United Presbyterian Minister Henry Calderwood at Catherine's place of residence, 203 Stobcross Street, Glasgow, Scotland. According to her marriage extract, Catherine was 24 and Robert was 29 when they married. The witnesses were Robert ? and James Gourlay.

Robert was a Steam Vessel Engineer according to the marriage extract. He was a Marine Engineer according to his son's, William Gourlay's, birth extract.

Robert Gourlay's niece Catherine Ford Jack married Robert's brother James Gourlay.
