Program Overview
The Donaghey Scholars Program at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock is a very small honors program that is distinct from most honors programs across the country. Though we believe a number of things set us apart from other programs, four features in particular distinguish us:
- Our Size:
Only 20-25 students are invited into the Donaghey Scholars Program each year. While the admissions process is competitive, it is not exclusive. Many students who are admitted each year tell us they almost did not apply because they did not think they would have a chance of becoming a Scholar in such a small pool, but nearly all of those students are very glad they took the time to apply. Because the Donaghey Scholars Program is small, we believe we can offer more support and attention to each of our Scholars. Since only about 75-80 students are in the Program at any one time, each student has the opportunity to not only get to know many other Scholars in the Program, but also receive advising from the director each semester. Also since only about 20-25 students are in each class room, students benefit by getting to know the faculty in those classes. - Financial Package:
The financial package that Scholars receive is quite competitive with scholarships offered across the country. In-state residents receive tuition and fee costs, a stipend at one of three levels ($4000, $6500, or $9000 per year), and financial support for a five-week study abroad program. Currently, the financial package ranges between $40,000 and $60,000 depending on the stipend the student receives. (Learn more-Click here) - Core Curriculum:
The Scholars interdisciplinary core curriculum replaces virtually all of the UALR core requirements. Only Scholars enroll in these small, seminar style courses that are team-taught by some of UALRs most outstanding professors. The Scholars faculty represent a full range of disciplines and they bring their expertise into the classroom where they co-teach with colleagues from other fields. It is typical for Biology and Physics, for example, to be represented in the Scholars course Science and Society; both Speech Communications and Rhetoric are the core disciplines of the Scholars course Rhetoric and Communication. Financial support for Study Abroad also distinguishes the Donaghey Scholars Program. Although most universities offer their students the opportunity to study abroad, very few subsidize and require that study. The program costs for studying, the tuition charges for the classes the student will enroll in for the summer study, and the airfare are paid for the student by the Donaghey Scholars Program. Students are sometimes responsible for the cost of some of their meals and any spending money they want to have. The costs to the student are minimal for a trip abroad. (Learn more-Click here)
