2009 Alumni Research Grants Awarded

The Donaghey Scholars Program Alumni Society of the UALR Alumni Association has awarded two students, Shariq Ali and Jessica Fawley, with the Second Annual Research Grant. Research grants of up to $1,000 are open to current Donaghey Scholars Program students who wish to pursue research opportunities that require additional resources. Often, these projects result in a Final Project, a graduation requirement for Donaghey Scholars. Funding for these grants is provided by Donaghey Scholars Alumni Society dues and donations.

Shariq Ali, a third-year Donaghey Scholar and UALR junior, is working with Dr. Brian Berry in the Chemistry department on a project titled “Study of the Self-Assembling Properties of Polymer Tethered Nanoparticles.” Funding from the Research Grant will allow Ali to travel to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Center for Neuron Research. Ali hopes to present his work at the American Chemical Society Meeting and Exposition next Spring.

Jessica Fawley, a second-year Donaghey Scholar and UALR junior, will use funding to attend the First World Congress on Positive Psychology in Philadelphia. The conference will help her gain exposure to her field and refine her Final Project topic.

Thanks to the Donaghey Scholars Alumni Society Research Grant, students can pursue new avenues in their research and gain experience with the grant-writing process. For more information on how you can reconnect with fellow alumni and support research at UALR through the Donaghey Scholars Alumni Association, visit www.ualr.edu/alumni, email dsp@ualr.edu, or call (501) 683-7752.
