Welcome from the Dean

Thank you for visiting the College of Science and Mathematics web page. We call ourselves CSAM, for short, and hope you become familiar enough with us that you will do the same.

CSAM has a seemingly diverse group of departments and programs but closer inspection will reveal that in every case CSAM faculty are delivering a science-based curriculum that prepares students with the tools to become the fuel for the Twenty-first Century workforce in Central Arkansas and elsewhere. That workforce increasingly relies on science, mathematics, and information technology. CSAM, especially with our partners at the University, intertwines all of those into an education that serves the needs of students in the Little Rock Metropolitan area.

Two CSAM Departments (Department of Chemistry in 1999 and Department of Nursing in 2002) honored the College through their selection as UALR Departments of Excellence. The selection is made by an external University committee and is the most prestigious award on campus at the departmental level. Other Departments in CSAM have consistently been finalists in the competition. I believe that the high ranking of CSAM Departments in this competition provides recognition of the strong commitment of the College to a quality learning experience.

We take an expansive view of scholarship that puts teaching first while including other activities as important forms of discovery and learning. There are very active research programs, involvement in enhanced delivery of science and mathematics in public schools, and contributions to public service needs in the Metropolitan region. Faculty provides opportunities for students to participate in those activities, thus enriching their learning experience beyond just classroom instruction.
